cpap and swine flu?
So I new to cpap, and thought it might be causing my asthma to flare up.
But it turns out that I actually have the H1N1 virus. The emergency room doc did not know whether I should continue using cpap while sick. Any advice?

I'm not a doctor, but it seems to me you should use your CPAP if you can tolerate it. I will be interested to see what others suggest.

Absolutely!!! It's essential to continue breathing; these hugely inflammatory diseases wreck havoc with our lungs and they need all the help they can get! Some who are hospitalized with flu are put on ventilators to help their breathing. That doc isn't knowledgable enough about CPAP. Will you have challenges? Sure, with congestion all of us have challenges. I'm just finishing up my max time using generic Afrin combatting congestion from a cold that just won't go away.gtaylorfry wrote:...continue using cpap while sick. Any advice?

I also have H1N1, Day 5 today, and have asthma. You should continue using your CPAP. The congestion symptoms from the flu, restricted breathing from asthma plus apnea/hypopnea just means your have triple threats toward your breathing. I have a pulse ox, set to alarm if I desat at 92 to do a peak flow, and asthma neb if needed. I have had continuous lower 02 saturation during the flu even with APAP. I slept one hour w.o. CPAP and the 02 saturations were lower. Link shows the increase 02 desats when I briefly slept w/o APAP first day of H1N1.gtaylorfry wrote:So I new to cpap, and thought it might be causing my asthma to flare up. Did the doctor prescribe Tamuflu, predisone? Be careful using OTC decogestants with asthma, they can increase asthma symptoms and be unsafe.
In addition to my meds, I am using the nasal rinses, followed by a saline gel before going to bed, then when I wake up congested, I do a nasal rinse, saline gel before returning to bed.
Good Luck, H1N1 is NO FUN!!!!

Re: cpap and swine flu?
Others here have reported that CPAP reduced the severity of the respiratory symptoms of a cold or flu. I hope this is true, as I cough like a three-pack-a-day smoker if I get a bad chest cold (I have never smoked).

Timbalionguy, I sure wish I could validate that claim......tornadic coughing episodes are not eased by my APAP!!!! The severity of my flu doesn't seem eased, I'm just glad it's an aid to help make breathing as best as it can be at the moment.

YOU DO NOT HAVE SWINE FLU!!!!!! almost no one does. The government lies and Obama is not informed. They stopped testing for H1N1 in August because CNN and others tested people who were told they were positive for H1N1 and found that anywhere from 85% to 98% of people tested by the state they live in were NEGATIVE. Swine flu is killing people who are immunocompromised, and the number of people who have died from swine flu has been vastly inflated. They are dying from flu, URI's, and a small few from H1N1. Check mercola or cnn....

Interesting perspective........however not necessarily accurate. Testing is continuing in the medical community in which I am employed especially in the peds and women's health services!!! Can you explain your tools to re-diagnose ......should I scratch my head and conclude you are working for the government directly under the mandate of Obama to dispute the idea H1N1 exists to deflate anxiety many have of contracting H1N1. We can't call it by the other name in my state of residence due to pig farming revenues.......by government order!!!! But when I recuperate, I will consider resuming consumption of PORKGuest wrote:YOU DO NOT HAVE SWINE FLU!!!!!! almost no one does. The government lies and Obama is not informed. Re: cpap and swine flu?
I'm just getting over H1N1 and have found that CPAP made nights a heck of a lot easier in terms of lessened congestion, etc. I found it helpful to have a really hot shower before bed just to let the steam clear up my sinuses, then straight to bed, turning up the heated humidifier just a bit on my H4i.
And, yeah, being sick is actually all the more reason to use CPAP so your immune system doesn't crash from lack of proper sleep.
I also took echinacea and vitamin C -- helped me a lot.
Hang in there!

Check out this story: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/10/ ... sHeadlinesGuest wrote:...SWINE FLU!!!!!! almost no one does....
Pretty damn suspicious if you ask me. My skeptical nature asks, "where's the money?" and big pharma-drug companies come up exceedingly profitable on this one...the tragedy is there really is H1N1 out there, but I'm not sure those potentially the most affected by this virus have been identified and properly protected and dosing everyone with partly tested vaccines is nuts. And don't think for one minute they tested the nasal mist or shot as it being delivered today...they tested prototypes containing mercury and other noxious substances. So, if you've been told you have H1N1 ensure that H1N1 was identified in a lab and not a guess based on your symptoms, esp those who were considering the vaccine and then got 'it'...what you had/have nay not have been H1N1.If you've been diagnosed "probable" or "presumed" 2009 H1N1 or "swine flu" in recent months, you may be surprised to know this: odds are you didn’t have H1N1 flu...In late July, the CDC abruptly advised states to stop testing for H1N1 flu, and stopped counting individual cases. The rationale given for the CDC guidance to forego testing and tracking individual cases was: why waste resources testing for H1N1 flu when the government has already confirmed there's an epidemic?...When CDC did not provide us with the material, we filed a Freedom of Information request with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)....While we waited for CDC to provide the data, which it eventually did, we asked all 50 states for their statistics on state lab-confirmed H1N1 prior to the halt of individual testing and counting in July. The results reveal a pattern that surprised a number of health care professionals we consulted. The vast majority of cases were negative for H1N1 as well as seasonal flu, despite the fact that many states were specifically testing patients deemed to be most likely to have H1N1 flu, based on symptoms and risk factors, such as travel to Mexico...It’s unknown what patients who tested negative for flu were actually afflicted with since the illness was not otherwise determined. Health experts say it’s assumed the patients had some sort of cold or upper respiratory infection that is just not influenza. With most cases diagnosed solely on symptoms and risk factors, the H1N1 flu epidemic may seem worse than it is. For example, on Sept. 22, this alarming headline came from Georgetown University in Washington D.C.: "H1N1 Flu Infects Over 250 Georgetown Students. H1N1 flu can be deadly and an outbreak of 250 students would be an especially troubling cluster. However, the number of sick students came not from lab-confirmed tests but from "estimates" made by counting "students who went to the Student Health Center with flu symptoms, students who called the H1N1 hotline or the Health Center's doctor-on-call, and students who went to the hospital's emergency room. Without lab testing, it's impossible to know how many of the students actually had H1N1 flu. But the statistical trend indicates it was likely much fewer than 250...Because of the uncertainties, the CDC advises even those who were told they had H1N1 to get vaccinated unless they had lab confirmation. "Persons who are uncertain about how they were diagnosed should get the 2009 H1N1 vaccine."
I just read this article and was horrified...thought it deserved being posted here.

Re: cpap and swine flu?
This is from the oklahoma dept of health, for the week ending 10/17:
The Public Health Laboratory (PHL) tested 109
specimens, of which 88 (80.7%) were positive
for influenza. All of the positive specimens were
confirmed as swine-origin influenza A (H1N1).
No, they didn't test a huge number of cases, but H1N1 is out there. Anyone who says it isn't is just stupid. A little girl in our city died today of confirmed H1N1. The scary part of it is that even though it is for most people a very mild illness, when it goes bad, it goes very badly very quickly, often in otherwise healthy children. So, whether you or I or anyone else really had it is really not even the issue.

Re: cpap and swine flu?
Hi,
I have had swine flu (probably) for a few days and feel better but it seems to be moving into my lungs. I know when I have a sinus infection the doctor tells me not to use my cpap. Could it be that the cpap is blowing the infection down into my lungs? I have asthma and I really don't want to make this illness worse by using cpap. On other hand, not using cpap makes me feel terrible. I wish I had thought to call the sleep doctor's office about this.
