New User Question - Cold

Post by Susancarol » Tue Oct 27, 2009 3:05 pm

I work up this morning with what I think is a cold. Lots of sneezing and runny nose. No fever or headache. I was just fitted this morning for a Quattro Full Face Mast, since my pillows did not want to stay in my nose and I was breathing through my mouth most of the night.
Anyway, should I use my new mask tonight or just wait until I feel better and this runny nose stops? Thanks for your support.

I think you should use your new mask tonight if you possibly can. Be sure you clean the cushion every day, at least while you have the cold.

I find, when I have had a cold and congestion, using cpap helps. Maybe a little more humidity?

Hope you are better soon!

Use the new mask if you can.

Just a side note. About a month into my treatment I turned my humidity down and I woke up with the same thing plus itching so bad I wanted to use a wire brush. No fever or other illness symptoms. I increased the humidity back to where I had it set before and symptoms all went away. Couple of weeks later I forgot to add water to the tank and it went dry. Woke up with sneezy, runny nose, itchy AGAIN.... So ever since then I make sure I have water in the tank. So sometimes these symptoms can occur because of the drying out of the nasal mucosa.

Of course we are now in the cold and flu season so it is possible that you may have something else but in the absence of any other symptoms and you otherwise feel okay, then you might give this a consideration.

Plus if you really are coming down with something added humidity often helps. Remember those hot showers that help clear up our breathing short term?

Susancarol,
When your breathing is compromised by a cold, your OSA is additionally at risk. May also be more challenging to use your CPAP. Check out the Flu, Cold Thread......several of us have posted of challenges with flu, cold and asthma illness and CPAP use.

I recently purchased a oral mask that I plan on using when I get sinus infections and cannot breath through my nose. I think it will really help but I haven't tried it yet.

I have found that if I get a sinus infection and I use my cpap it often pushes that crap straight from my sinuses directly down into my nose and causes me to get a respiratory infection in my lungs! I'm hoping by bypassing my sinuses, I'll avoid pushing the crud down into my lungs.

If you have a full face mask, you might be able to just tape your nose closed if its bothering you. The humidity is very helpful though so if you are able to breathe, you might be best off just cranking up the humidity and trying to breathe through your nose.

This is what happens if you drink or eat cold temperature liquids or food...passage of pathogens into the lungs is enhanced with cold temps. I have a cold now and am drinking lots of warm water and orange spice herb 'tea' to avoid getting a chest cold.
