Mask Noise Increased

Post by jrfoster » Mon Oct 26, 2009 7:57 pm

I have been using the Mirage Activa Nasal Mask for the last six months with good results. AHI now down to 1.8. However, the last couple of nights when I put the mask on the noise of the rushing air is much louder. No leaks around the mask only the loud sound of rushing wind that I do not remember being that loud.
Then when I woke up about 5:30 this morning the noise was gone and it was nice and quiet! I actually liked the very little sound the mask was making. If it can do that at 5:30am why can't it do that at 11:00pm? Nothing else has changed. Any ideas?

Jeff

I've had similar observations for months and am trying to figure out why the sound comes and goes during the night. Sometimes the sound is more noticeable when I go to bed and other times when I awake in the morning. I have not observed any pattern - seems to be completely random through the night.

I run a table fan all night at low or medium speed to create some white noise to lessen what I hear from my machine/mask while I am falling asleep. The fan helps some but not enough some nights. Give a fan a try and see if one helps your situation.

Don't know if this applies to your situation but seems to apply to my machine/mask Noise" In my case, the machine sound that I hear results from changing from inhaling to exhaling and vise versa. I think that the sound is influenced by the mask dynamics. The M-Series machines (I have two) appear to be the worst re producing this inhale/exhale sound. I've lived with this sound so far but plan to buy another brand, not Respironics, in 2010 unless I can make this sound completely disappear from my sleeping life.

For some people with moisturizer, the excess moist does it.
For some people, like me, it looks like some of the flushing holes have
changed their shape or something like that. The noise became so loud it disturbed my
falling asleep. Even our cat got irritated. It tried to silence the mask by putting his both front pawns
on top of one another and trying to block the noisiest hole.

You might want to check it by closing one hole at the time and listen what happens to the noise.

yep - got the same problem with my nasal pillows although not every night for some reason. Actually had to take them off around 2.00am last night because they started whistling ! I suspect it's got something to do with the humidifier so I've turned that down a bit. I know what you mean about the noise coming and going during the night - some nights they are so quiet I hardly know they are on and other times they start making strange noises for no reason (or so it seems). Still trying to figure it out !

I have an M-Series and the machine itself makes no noise. It is the mask that makes the noise in my case -- soft and acceptable with I inhale and exhale; way loud when there is a mask leak. Maybe I just got lucky with the machine the DME gave me!

It happened to me once when there was a minute tear in the masks narrow tube. It would leak loudle in certain positions.

Was wondering if when others have heard more noise did it translate to a higher than average leak rate?My leak rate went down last night with more noise , I would have guessed it would have been the opposite .

As I went to bed last night I made sure the hose was firmly connected to both the machine and my mask, did everything I know how to do and what do ya know? It was nice and quiet all night long! I have no idea what happened on those previous nights but thankful that it was "back to normal" last night. We will see how long this lasts. Thanks for all your ideas.

My husband's machine is much quieter since we turned off Flex and attached the Whisper Cap.
