how to get rid of "gunk" in Liberty nasal pillows?

Post by angela6 » Sat Oct 10, 2009 9:39 am

The nasal pillows on my Liberty mask have gotten milky colored and there is some sort of "gunk" inside the part of the pillows that go inside the nose. I don't care so much about the color, but the gunk is disturbing. I can inset a cotton swab and the gunk somewhat comes off, but not totally.

My cleaning routine is to wash the pillows and cushion in Johnson's baby shampoo and every week clean in Control Solution III. According to Resmed "Do not use solutions containing vinegar, bleach, chlorine, alcohol, aromatics, moisturizers, antibacterial agents or scented oils to clean any part of the system or air tubing. These solutions may cause damage and reduce the life of the product ".

The nasal pillows have been used for 3 months now. Is this a sign that the pillows need to be replaced?

then gunk must be coming from your nostrils or sinuses, google nasal irrigation or sinus irrigation which has several things that wash the gunk out, better than using antihistamines, IMO

I would be using chlorine bleach regardless, Ive seen black mould in masks, this gives off spores which you dont want to be breathing in

Rather than use bleach or vinegar, I'd simply boil the pillows for about five minutes. That should get all the gunk out and disinfect them. If you have problems with the seal, then yes, you need new pillows.

I often have nasal discharge; my routine: wash with Dawn, let sit soapy for at least 5 mins, rinse well, wash with 7th Generation (to get rid of the Dawn that sets my allergies off), let sit soapy for several mins, rinse well, spray with white vinegar (loosens all residues) and let sit for 1-3 mins, rinse very very well, let air dry.

lets just look at it this way....

What size nose pieces do you where? (s,m,l) I was a set of small and med somewhere... they are from a large mask if that matters. the small never been used. the mediums were tried out for a couple of nights.. will send you the right size if that will help.
