OT Spicy Foods Affect Sleep Architecture

Post by Muse-Inc » Mon Oct 05, 2009 7:26 pm

Watching Food Network last night and caught the tailend of a sorta of study they did to prove-disprove this myth. They had volunteers eat a spicy dinner then did (I presume a modified) PSG on them and sure enough, spicy food decreased the amt of time in deep sleep (Stages 3 & 4). Don't think they mentioned anything about REM, but still the reduction of SWS was significant. Thought y'all might be interested in noting whether your own sleep seems to be affected by eating spicy food. Bet the Zeo might pinpoint that effect. Might not be true for everyone and those of us with SDB might be affected differently.

Depends on the Individual I Guess ! I indulge on Jalepeno"s nightly with my evening Meal and I sleep throughout the night---even reach the Dreaming stage several times a week so i guess your Question could be configured to the other question---- What came fisrt. The Chicken of the Egg ? Tonight I had Taco Salad with the Normal ration of Jalepeno's ( 8 to 10 slices ) so I hope this doesn't Jinx me of My Quality sleep ? Also, I take Melatonin ( 3 Mg ) nightly.

Uh oh... I'll admit I'm a "fire-eater"... I hope that one's mileage may vary on this one!

Let me tell you........
My sleeping pattern depends wholely on what
I eat!

Best for me is to eat before 6pm -
Dare not eat dairy, sugary foods/drinks,
(sodas/alcohol) starch, spicey foods, etc.

Best meal is meat with salad or veggies.

Everytime, when I don't eat right, I stuggle
with sinusitis/allergy and need to take
tablets to clear the sinusses.

Tablets don't resolve the problem 100%
and leave me with a very restless night!
blocked nose, etc

I just came back from the nursery -
bought some herbs -
(lemon thyme, Sweet Basil & coriander)

I think having herbs (NOT spices) with one's
food is much healthier.
