its a microfber filter. Seems to pick up dirt. I use it. You can buy a bunch for cheap on ebay if you are paying out of pocket.

Which goes on first, the white or black? How?

The white one goes first, closest to the machine. The black one one goes over the white one.

The white filter is optional but you should use the black/grey filter.

Just a note- the black filter should be washed with warm water and soap about every month and put back in the machine when it is completely dry. It's a good idea to always have a clean spare one while the one is drying. My machine came with 2 of those. I expect your did too.

The white filters are NOT reusable. I have allergies and look at my white filter every 2 weeks, especially during allergy season. If is showing signs of dirt, I get rid of it and put in a fresh one. Otherwise I change the white filter every month as well.

I still change it every month because I have seasonal allergies (that lasts from early Spring until the first frost) and I also have a compromised immune system because of Rheumatoid Arthritis and the drugs I take for it so that I can keep going!

Possibly others would not need to do that but I have to be cautious.

So sorry to hear about your ailments. It probably makes sense for everyone to change the filter on a regular basis. I was just curious to hear your thoughts - I always appreciate your insights.

Thanks araminta. Yes, everyone should change those filters on a regular basis- some more than others. I don't mind sharing!

I also change both filters the first of every month whether they need changing or not because I like having a routine. I guess it's because I'm a Virgo!
