endoscopy and colonoscopy for cpap users

I'm having an endoscopy and colonoscopy this Fri. I was concerned about having apneas so I asked my dr who said not to worry because I won't be asleep that long. I'm scared.
Anybody had experience with this?

I had both....months before being diagnosed w/OSA.

With these proceedures you will most likely be under what is called 'conscious sedation'. You will only be partially sedated and will not be able to remember anything. The anesthetic comonly used is 'versed' which allows you to respond to commands but not remember anything.

Since they use the same scope on both ends....ask your GI to be sure and do the upper before the lower....LOL

They use Propofol, too. Versed no longer has much of an effect on me, I'm told because of the many surgeries requiring mega pain meds. I had both an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy less than a month prior to my OSA diagnosis, and I had no problem.

Just be sure to let the anesthesia people know. You'll likely get more attention from the staff than you might otherwise receive. Very reassuring.

I'm sure you will be fine, though it's definitely worth mentioning the SA.

I had an Endoscopy 2 weeks ago & although it's only a 5 minute procedure, I must have been out really fast - I was told after the procedure, that I had fallen asleep almost immediately & that they had given me Oxygen 3 mins into the 5 min procedure, as they noticed my Oxygen Sat levels were down...

I talked to one of the procedure nurses a few days later - wanted to find out what my oxygen level had fallen to - she told me that they had automatically given me oxygen, when my level fell to 87%, as this was standard procedure.

It did worry me a bit that my O2 level had fallen within 3 minutes of falling asleep...

I've had both numerous times without issue.
Since I've been diagnosed with OSA I let the surgeon know and asked if I needed to bring my machine to the recovery room. I was told I didn't need it and that I'd be under constant monitoring. He's the same doc that did my sigmoid collectomy in 2003 so I give him my trust -- he's always done me right!!!! (Wish I could have held off the collectomy for 14 months. The doc told me then that he'd just done his first collectomy with a scope; So instead of being cut from just above the belly button all the way down to the pubic bone he was able to do it with 2 small incisions.....sure would have made recovery a lot easier!!!! )

At any rate, I wouldn't worry too much about it....I can't imagine sleeping without "my little buddy", but I trust my doc.....

I have had both. Endo w/o any anesthesia (and therefore no problem cpap-wise), and a full bore colonoscopy, for which I was knocked out. I had my cpap, but it was not needed. Be sure to tell the doc and the anesthetist that you have OSA. It won't be the first time they have had a patient with OSA amd they will know how to handle it. You will do fine!

Although I have never had a colonoscopy or an endoscopy, I have been in the room with my Mother several times for (both) and she did just fine, she would tell me if she needed more paim meds and I in turn would tell the nurse & she would give her more if needed, I was also in with my sister and again, she did just fine but she would alert them herself when she wanted more, that happened only once in the beginning or maybe half-way through the procedure so you will be fine just try to have someone go in with you (if they are allowed), when I went in with my Sis, they made me sign a waiver that in the event I fainted , and hit the floor that I wouldn't sue them, oh my goshers!!!
I'm in California & I don't know if it's that way everywhere but try to get a family member to go in with you, it helps alot!!!

I have had both of these procedures multiple times, some before and some after my OSA diagnosis. I did tell every nurse involved and the doctor, and I also asked them to please raise the head of my bed when the procedure was over to lessen opportunity for apneas. Never had a problem.

I was more worried about my PLMD. My legs can get quite wild when I sleep, so I was concerned I might kick someone at an inopportune time. Either I didn't kick or they were kind enough to not tell me.
