Daily Nose Bleeds

Post by Uncle_Bob » Fri Aug 28, 2009 3:52 pm

Since Tuesday I have had a violent nose bleed every day between the hours of 2pm and 3pm.

It's pretty annoying as i don't always catch the start of it and have ended up with a red keyboard and stained two shirts.

I have tried nasal gel and saline spray but thats not working

Has anybody else experienced this? Therapy NOT going well I'm afraid that I'll have a nose bleed while on the mask soon

I have not experienced this at all. Is this the first time you've ever had nosebleeds like this? Have you changed anything with your therapy like the humidifier level?

If you haven't changed things with your xpap therapy, and haven't had nose bleeds on a regular basis before this, you need to see a doctor. Let the doctor assess the cause.

A few years back, before cpap, I had nosebleeds daily, sometimes two or three per day. Often it was my fault as I would rub or pick my nose. But just as often the nose would start bleeding without warning while I was sitting at my desk or just walking. I had to take a spare shirt to work because it would happen so quickly that before I realized it blood would end up on my shirt front. I went to my doctor thinking that not much could be done, but he gave me advise that has really helped. Per his instructions, every night before bed, I cote the inside of my nose with just a little petroleum jelly (vaseline). In my case, I think scabs were forming and becoming dry and hard inside my nose. These eventually broke off, and the exposed capillaries would start issuing blood. The vaseline dissolved the scabs and coated the skin keeping it moist and soft. Doing this every evening before bed has virtually eliminated the nosebleeds. It was one of the best pieces of advise I have gotten from my Doctor. Of course nosebleeds have many different causes and can be indicators of other issues, so having your doctor take a look is a good idea.

One should really NEVER use a petroleum based product such as Vaseline inside the nose. The oily/greasy can combine w/your nasal secretions and can end up in your lungs causing lipoid pneumonia (per Mayo Clinic). NOT something you want!

Ayr Saline Nasal Gel will accomplish the same thing w/o the risk of lipoid pneumonia.

Peroxide helps to remove blood stains from clothing and other items. Applied sooner is better.

A company called Biolife, here in FL makes an excellent product for stopping nose bleeds , it's available in most drug stores in the bandage isle. http://www.biolife.com/Consumer.html

While it doesn't solve the cause, it makes it easier to deal with it when it happens. The other products are good to have around the farm if you are prone to deep lacerations like me. It's a smaller quantity of a QuikClot type product that's credited for saving hundreds of lives on the battlefield.

I used to have nosebleeds alot when I was a kid and my nose is still senstive to nosebleeds. We did find out though that aspirn caused alot of my problems, cut out the aspirin and the major nosebleeds ceased--now i'm not saying cut out the aspirin if you're on it for heart attack prevention, etc or cut out blood thinners if you're on those--Please DON'T without checking w/ dr --but in my case we narrowed it down to when I had the major noosebleeds it was because I was sick and mom gave me aspirin. Also a side note--my tech said that if you're senstive to nosebleeds you don't want nasal pillows blowing air directly in your nose.

Slinky is giving very important information. My husband was prone to nose bleeds until it had to be cauterized by our ENT who even has that information about Vaseline printed on his patient instruction form. He recommends Ayr Saline Gel as well.

Also make sure that you consider any and all medication and/or nasal sprays that you're using.

I know that some nasal sprays have side effects of nose bleeds.

Thanks for the replies, i was really quite scared as i have never had a nose bleed before as far as i can remember.
The doctor inspected my nose and could not see any source scab or anything because i was too inflamed. She told me to use saline spary 8 times a day and take claritin D before bedtime. If i still bleed over the next 4 days i have to go see ENT specialist.

So i get home and spray my nose and immediately get another nose bleed, so it looks like i could me moving on up to twice daily

A few weeks prior to this i had stopped using my humidifier, now its back on set to #3.

I tried the Innomed Hybrid last night for the first time to take some of the pressure off my nose, leak was 0.6 L/min

But it was my 2nd night on APAP and my AI was 0.0 and AHI 4.3

What a ride
