POLL: What is your "typical" nightly AHI and machine type?

Post by Jason S. » Fri Aug 28, 2009 8:38 am

OK, new poll I am curious to see the difference, but we probably need 50 responses for each machine type (100 total) in order for the poll to be valid.

A max of 5-10 for ResMed?

I think we're gonna need a bigger boat!

(I thought I'd come torture in the new poll too, to bump it higher than the other one.)

Well, I was limited to 10 choices, 5 each, and they had to be the same in order to compare. If ResMed is over 10.0, they can put it in the 5.0-10.0 bucket. There is not going to be a high percentage of non ResMed in the 5-10 bucket, so if there is a huge difference as you claim it still will be evident.

Thanks for going easy on me. I have a tendency to stalk celebrities, following them from poll to poll.

Yes, you are quite the troublemaker. Perhaps you should change your avatar to Woody Woodpecker. The time I spent arguing with you I could have been off adopting more African children.

I use a ResMed Vantage S-8 in cpap mode, pressure of 12, ramp of 5 min. My AHI varies between 1.7 and 2.3, with the AI almost always 0. Of course, the ResMed algorithm is notorious for aggressively scoring hypopneas (or is it that Respironics are more lax about scoring hypopneas? Discuss. <chortle>). I pay more attention to the AI score, which is nearly always zero. I average 8.5 hours use a night.

My personal theory is that ResMed wanted to provide trending data for the UARS people too. Just a theory, that.

Since I can't vote twice, it would be prejudicial for me to vote at all.

At a fixed CPAP pressure of 11.0 (so ALGORITHM issues are not involved, only event definitions),
with the same nasal mask (ResMed Activa),
twenty nights on each machine,
the averages of my nightly results are:

ResMed: AHI = 5.2 (AI = 0.2, HI = 5.0)
Respironics: AHI = 1.2 (AI = 0.5, HI = 0.7)

In theory, my responses to the same fixed pressure from each machine should be physiologically identical.
If so, the different numbers are just different ways the two brands "present" the same breathing patterns.

The same information, but with the ResMed UltraMirage Full Face mask:

ResMed: AHI = 9.3 (AI = 0.8, HI = 8.6)
Respironics: AHI = 3.3 (AI = 2.0, HI = 1.3)

So, not only do machines matter (and they matter DIFFERENTLY for fixed pressure CPAP and for AutoPAP),
but masks (or perhaps mask types) matter also.
And for me, it also matters GREATLY whether or not I tape my mouth (taping makes things MUCH WORSE!).

Additional details from my data, including data on AutoPAP, are posted at:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=42646

Thanks for an interesting poll. Velbor

Early returns:

The average AHI for all users (previous poll) is 3.30
The average AHI for ResMed users is 3.76 (so far in this poll)

Still early, but my guess that the difference would be less than 0.5 was a pretty good guess.I don't think anyone is disputing that the machines score AHI differently. I think what is being disputed is that the original poll was not a fair representation of typical AHI. I say it was, relative to a skew upward of about 0.5 to accommodate those ResMed users who have high HI indexes relative to their AI indexes.

I guess it depends on how you massage the "statistics" at this point in the poll, since almost half of the participating ResMed users (11 of 23) have home-machine-estimated AHIs 3 or above compared to about a tenth (3 out of 29) of participating non-ResMed users having AHIs 3 or above. Nearly a third of ResMed users (7 out of 23), so far, have AHIs 5 or above; whereas, only 1 out of 29 non-ResMed users has an AHI 5 or above.

I didn't fill out the poll because I am a Resmed user with a typical AHI between 15-20 each night. I'd love to get an AHI of 5-10 each night. I don't feel rested at this point but my situation is still being worked on...a neurologist will be seeing me in early Oct and maybe he will be able to figure out what is going on and find the right med to calm my brain down safely. That may then lead to us being to work on getting my AHI down. The Resmed may not be the right algorithm for me but we are waiting to resolve the brain issue before pursuing the machine issue.

The pollster said:

So you should choose the 5 to 10.

He said his boat was limited to ten slats--oops, I mean, that the poll was limited to ten slots. (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=44698&p=399525#p399139)

Glad you are hanging in there, and here, and I am looking forward to your getting better sleep, mar.

Why don't you vote in the poll, Mar? Regardless of the reasons for your high AHI, your vote is still valid for the purpose of this poll. (IMNSHO, anyway!)

My AHI is high, too. Last night my AHI was 14.0 with an AI of almost 4! My doc is wanting to do a BiPap trial, though I'm not really sure how it will make a difference. Here's hoping, though!
