Mystery solved-weight gain not due to CPAP

Post by OutaSync » Sun Aug 02, 2009 12:49 pm

Since I've been complaining here about my 20 pound weight gain since being on CPAP, I thought I should set the record straight. It wasn't the lexapro that I discontinued about a year ago, and it wasn't the CPAP. Last Friday, my GYN discovered a 10 cm cyst growing behind my uterus and pushing everything forward. Once the CA-125 test comes back, surgery will be scheduled. It does not appear to be ovarian, but they won't know for sure until they go in.

I hope this takes care of the constant lower back pain that makes it impossible to find a comfortable sleeping position.

OutaSync, I hope the blood test is negative. I had a similar experience at 42 and had a total hysterectomy as a result. Fortunately it was only a leiomyoma, which is a benign, smooth muscle tumor. But it weighed six pounds! Fingers crossed and please keep us posted.

Yes, waiting is excruciating. I want to get it over with. My GYN is going on vacation the first two weeks in August, so it looks as though I may have to wait until late August, first week in Sept. He said if the CA-125 came in high, he may have to turn it over to an oncologist who specializes in this area.

I know tha there all kinds of things that it could be. It appears as a blig black circle in the ultrasound so is fluid filled. That is the good thing. The bad thing is that it's firmly attached and rather large, so may not be able to remove laparoscopically. This thing may be growing on adhesions from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy from 26 years ago!!!

Oh Bev, so sorry to hear of this but glad you are finally getting some answers to the weight gain and pain. I will pray that you have great results and can have it removed laproscopically. Maybe when this is out your sleep will improve also!! Carol

My thoughts and prayers are with you. At least now you can take positive action. I had an ovarian cyst--actively growing!--removed during the 2nd trimester of my second pregnancy...no picnic, but at least there was an explanation, action & no cancer. I hope it isthe same for you.

Glad you figured out what was causing problems and wish you the best with the test results and taking care of the problem.

Keep us posted as things develop, Bev. Ten cms - I'm picturing a water balloon about that size - bet that could cause some symptoms! Hope this is soon all behind you and even resolves your lower back pain.

Kathy

P.S. Used to work in Pathology. Largest fluid filled cyst I saw was the size of a large watermelon, and it was from a petite woman who had few symptoms except frequent urination - go figure!

I watched a Youtube video of them removing a cyst the size of a basketball. Yikes!
Frequent urination was one of my complaints, but much better at night since CPAP. It was the daytime requirements that (16 or so) that bothered me.

Thanks, Mar. With 4 weeks off of work during recovery, I'll have plenty of time to catch up with this forum.

Bev,

Having been there with the waiting and the doctor out of town and the whole nine yards, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you.

At least you are beginning to get some answers!

This forum has taught me to be proactive regarding my health. Still, I've been to half a dozen doctors since my fall in 2006, had many MRI's, x-rays and exams. I've been poked, prodded and tested, and guess who discovered the cyst? A tech at the National Reseach Clinic! Of course, she thought it was my bladder and turned me over to the OB/GYN for further scans. My GP who has been poking me for 18 years and never done a transvaginal scan, would never have found it.

Bev,

Somehow, it doesn't surprise me. If things had been left to my (now former) GP and his automatic assumption that whatever problem I had was related to my stuffing my face (an assumption on his part), oh, another year or so from now, I'd be finding out that I had badly metastasized cancer, instead of having now had a year of negative tests.

If she thought the cyst was your bladder, what did she think your bladder was?

I'll be sending good thoughts for you that the labs come back with what you need to know. Knowledge is emphatically the key to being proactive in your health care.

Sorry to hear about this, Bev.

None of us wants to hear news like that, but any answer is better than having a problem (with pain, no less) and not knowing what's causing it. I hope you feel like a new person after this cyst is removed and can sleep in comfort.

Wishing you the best.
