ResMed Card Reader differences?

I have the resmed S8 AutoSet II and my DAta Card is only 22mm Wide so the measurements 13+24+17=54 are off just a bit should I split the difference? 14+22+18=54

Hi normsfirebird from rupertbear ....I've measured my S8 Autoscore smart card with a dial gauge vernier and agree with you that the resmed data card is 22mm wide (actually 22.2mm) and it has 5mm of plastic on each side of the resmed gold chip, the gold chip being 12mm wide.

If you look at a typical gold chipped credit card, the embedded gold chip is (almost) exactly the same width as the embedded resmed chip, namely 12 mm. With the credit card being 54 mm wide, it has 17mm of plastic to the left side of the gold chip, and 25mm of plastic to the right of the 12mm gold chip...So for the credit card we have 17mm + 12mm + 25mm = 54mm wide.


Using the same credit card layout as shown in the pics on this posting, I believe that a more accurate cut on the 54mm wide credit card will be to remove the 22mm section (to position the resmed card off centre) leaving 12mm of plastic remaining on the left side and 20 mm of plastic remaining on the right side....so instead of the measurements above of 13+24+17=54 and 14+22+18=54 ......try 12+22+20 = 54

Disclaimer: my eyes are fairly old and tired, and I wear tri-focals, so please check my figures (if you can find a chipped 54mm credit card) and post here and let me know how you got on with your measurements before you try mine. I won't be able to try my measurements until my card reader arrives from Taiwan in approx 2 weeks time

Is a ACR38U-PNC-R already equipped with the Card Guide? I have seen these advertised as discontinued stock.

I believe the ACR38 series card readers are designed to take a standard 54mm wide plastic card. The resmed card is only 22mm wide and has its own very own (resmed brand) card reader, designed specifically to take the very narrow 22mm wide resmed smart card.

Although it appears that many standard smart card readers (like the ACR38, and others) will read the narrow resmed card, this is only possible if the narrow resmed card is positioned accurately in a guide or holder so that the narrow resmed smart card takes up the correct position when placed inside the standard (54mm) smart card reader. You will also require the correct resmed software on your PC in order to read the data on the resmed card.

Checkout the previous pics on this post, the only way (at present) of getting a "guide" for the narrow resmed card, is to make your own !

The resmed card is only 22mm wide and has its own very own (resmed brand) card reader, designed specifically to take the very narrow 22mm wide resmed smart card.

The Resmed reader is an ACR 38... its printed on the lable on the bottom of the reader.

The only things different about the Resmed version is that it has a boxier version of the ACR 38 body moulding, it is fiited with an additional (removeable) narrow-card guide moulded in blue plastic, and it has a Resmed logo (etc) printed on the top.

I use the ResMed one and it always works. I did this after listening to so many people having problems with the other readers. I believe that I spent less due to the fact that it was plug and play and I didn't waste so many hours trying to make the others work

I can tell you that the drivers supplied by Resmed in the resscan 3.7 install are EXACTLY the same as the drivers for the ACS ACR38 from their web site.

The primary difference is the plastic molding the unit is housed in. The Resmed version comes with a molded plastic guide so the smaller card fits in properly. If you get the ACS ACR38 you will want to make a guide for the card.

Hey All,

I ordered and recieved the acr38 to test and it works perfect. you dont even need to make a guide. All you need to do is look in the slot and see where the metal reader contacts are and just slide the card in there..........

Have tested it several times and read the card everytime.....

As an aside if your eyes are good, then you can just skip the homemade acr38 adapter and guess where to insert the card based on the location of the contacts in the reader. I've done this for over a month now (~30 insertions) without any problems.

Even better than guessing, draw lines with a fine tip sharpie marker. 13mm from the right side and 18mm from the left side.(looking into the slot) Then you will know exactly where the card needs to be positioned. I used mine for months this way before I made my card guide. It worked every time.

I have one rather simple question:
On the ACS website, they show two different ACR-38's. One is the straight ACR-38

That is the one you want.

Furthermore, could you please provide the dimensions of your nifty little card guide that you made. Specifically i am looking for the widths of the 2 strips that go on either side of the Resmed Smart Card.

This really is a simple task can be easily done without any precision tools beyond a sharp cutting instrument and a good straight-edge. I just made a simple template from "manilla folder" card, based on marking out a ResScan card that was aligned to be correctly recognised by AutoScan (the predecessor software to ResScan), then cut up an old credit card to make the permanent guide.

JimW203 told me he was going to make an engineering drawing from the photos of my card guide.....




... so he may be able to give you the exact dimensions.

When you go to purchase the card it asks if you want:
1. STD - No SAM
2. CCID No SAM +$5.00
3. w/ SAM Module +$10.00

Can someone please help me with this? I have no idea which one I need. Thanks!
