Waiting now for Sleep Study! Finally!
It will happen on the 25th! and i'm nervous as heck! I know what they do as I went with hubby while they were getting him all hooked up etc for his.
i just hope I can sleep enough to make the study good. I cancelled the oximetry thingy because i figured it really wouldn't tell us that much anyhow other than whether my oxygen level was going down or not. and i'd probably still have to have the other study anyway right? I hope i'm doing the right thing.

Relax. You're doing the right thing.
The sleep study is no big deal. Get in some extra exercise on the day of the study, avoid stimulants, bring your own pillow (and teddy bear if it will help) and go to sleep.
Remember that the sleep tech will adjust the temperature in the room for you. And most physicians will prescribe Ambien for anxious patients because, unlike some other sleep agents, it does not interfere with the test results.

Don't worry, Karessamom. This is one of the few tests that you don't have to study for to be able to pass.
Re: Waiting now for Sleep Study! Finally!
No extra sleep before and no napping on the big day...er, night . If it were me, I'd avoid a high protein meal as they keep me wide awake and alert.
On my big night, I had a steak and salad dinner, was convinced I'd not sleep in the study (extra light sleeper), and was anxious. I forgot I was so exhausted all the time that I easily fell asleep standing up leaning against something (how embarrassing ). If you're as tired as most with apnea, you'll probably fall asleep without too much trouble.
Even if very interrupted sleep, if it's a split study with titration (wearing a mask of course), it might just be the best sleep you've had in years!
Keep us posted!

Talk to the doc and get him/her to sample an AmbienCR, make sure they dose you according to weight. Eat a light dinner that normally agrees with you, go easy on the fluids. No caffeine 12 hours before, no cola, no chocolate, no other stimulants, watch OTC meds if you're taking any like Claratin-D, they can hype you up. I think the sheet I got said no evening exercise but morning was fine. Relax & joke it up with the technician. On my next go around, I'm taking my portable radio that has a built in shut-off timer so I can listen to some light jazz as I doze off.

Congratulations on the Sleep Study appointment! Listen to the experts (us), those tips they offered will serve you well. This is an important step, so I'm proud of you for being brave and sticking with it. CPAPtalk.com made a video about what to expect when you get to a sleep study, it might be helpful to you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZTzrVGSOvw. Let us know how it goes, and welcome!

Re: Waiting now for Sleep Study! Finally!
I'm kinda actually looking forward to it now beleive it or not! Also will they let you bring a mug?? I wake up with cotton mouth so many times now that i'm taking my mug to bed with me LOL! probaby a mouth breather but I always start out breathing out of my nose go figure LOL! I actually slept pretty well last night (i think) and had dreams! but why do I continually wake up exhausted and BLah?? I really do hope they do find something on the study that would explain why i feel the way I do. I guess i'm kind of aprehensive because what if they dont?? what if nothing shows up--then it was a waste of time and more importantly $$$! IF they do find out i have SA I know it's easily treatable and hopefully soon i'll start feeling better and sleeping better! that's what i've got to look forward to!

Eating food with lots of calcium will also help you sleep. So if you can tolerate it have a nice glass of milk before bedtime.

Re: Waiting now for Sleep Study! Finally!
Make sure you sleep on your back for at least part of the study as apnea is typically worse with back sleeping. They should also titrate (if a split study) with you sleeping on your back. If they'd only studied me sleeping on my side, I likely would NOT have been using CPAP for the past nearly 2 years; I was diagnosed with severe apnea.karessamom wrote:...I really do hope they do find something on the study that would explain why i feel the way I do. Re: Waiting now for Sleep Study! Finally!
I actually tried taking a nap today with hubby's APAP--i couldn't sleep with the mask, however it seemed easier to breathe, once i got used to it. I was actually laying more down rather than propped up like I usually have to do to breathe--so don't know if that means anything or not. I did want to sleep but if I did it was only for a few minutes. At least i'm getting used to it incase I end up needing one.

Well, I was going to suggest the CPAP.COM video about the sleep lab to you, but I see Katharine has beaten me to it!
It's a good video. I've sent it to a number of friends.

Re: Waiting now for Sleep Study! Finally!
good luck with your sleep study! keep us posted as to the outcome. if you're a light sleeper, take your earplugs! the techs at my sleep study were noisy...and the patient in the room next to mine slept with their TV on!
also...shave your legs! they hook sensors to your legs to check for restless leg syndrome!

Re: Waiting now for Sleep Study! Finally!
Update--I'm a little scared!!-- I shouldn't be I know but I was looking online at my health profile from my insurance company and my pcp dxed me with Central SA (prior to the sleep study) Normally i'd just blow that off for right now as maybe wrong code or something but when I combine it with what little the tech told me and my symptoms and reading a little about CSA--I'm putting 2 and 2 together and not likeing it! I won't get my results back probably until Tuesday because dr. is out of town. (i just called to see if they had it) I guess i'm more than a little scared right now. Hopefully it won't be that bad and can be easily treated, although I know that centrals are not as easily treated as obstructive.

Re: Waiting now for Sleep Study! Finally!
Centrals generally just require a different machine so no reason to panic. Instead of simply splinting the airway open, the machine detects the central event and supports your breathing until you take over. There's a pretty good 3 part video series on the Resmed site that explains it. You'll be just fine.karessamom wrote:Update--I'm a little scared!!-- I shouldn't be I know but I was looking online at my health profile from my insurance company and my pcp dxed me with Central SA (prior to the sleep study) Normally i'd just blow that off for right now as maybe wrong code or something but when I combine it with what little the tech told me and my symptoms and reading a little about CSA--I'm putting 2 and 2 together and not likeing it!
