CPAP lifespan?

Hi,
I'm new to this forum. I've been using CPAP unit for the last 8 years. I'm wondering what the average life span of a CPAP unit should be. Each of my 3 units(Fisherand Paykel) have lasted only 2 1/2 years, dying always just out of warrantee. Considering they cost a minimum of $1500 each, it is very expensive to keep replacing them. The heating plate has just died on my last unit and I am told that Fisher and Paykel do not repair machines but either replace them if in warrantee or charge fully if not. I've always been careful with the water levels, not running dry and not spilling into the machine etc. Has anyone else had the same problems? I'd appreciate your help.

Have you considered using other types of machines (which do the same job) such as Respironics or Resmed? Respironics are known as "tanks", at least the older ones were, because of their reliability and lifespan, though any machine on a given day, of course, can have problems and I doubt if anyone would guarantee a machine for a specific length of time.

While I am not familiar with your machine, you stated that the heating plate failed. I assume that means your humidifier no longer works except as a passive device. Have you considered getting an external humifier? That should be much cheaper than replacing the whole unit.

And why did you pay more than 1500.00 for ANY xPAP?

They are much cheaper than this if you look anyplace other than your DME.

I guess they don't build them like they used to. I have a stand-alone Fisher and Paykel HC100 humidifier that was in active use for more than 10 years and still works fine. It's run dry hundreds of times, been dragged through airports, shoved into luggage, you name it. As for machines, my longevity story is a beige Respironics RemStar Plux LX, which I got more than a decade ago after my rental period was up and insurance bought me a machine. It ran nearly 23,000 hours before it started making loud scraping noises.

I have had a Repironics Pro tank for almost 7 years now and it is still going strong! The humidifier was recalled a few years ago and replaced free. Apparently it was a fire hazard.


That is now a back up machine. I have had my M Series auto for about 16 months now.

it always helps to keep the airfilter clean

it seems the newer CPAPs arent as well built as they were so look for a long warranty
