Sleep Pillows

Post by DoriC » Mon Jun 15, 2009 9:40 am

I thought it would be interesting to know what sleep pillows are being used for different positions, types of masks and presssures. All the pros and cons. We have gone through so many different pillows and still looking for "the best".

Pre xPAP, I always preferred a pillow that was fairly flat and that I could squish and squash however I liked without it fighting back. I am mostly a side and partial stomach sleeper. I used an LL Bean goosedown pillow with soft "firmness." The goosedown in this pillow is specially washed to make it hypoallergenic for allergy sufferers,

To my delight, I found it works great with my xPAP; I can still squish and squash it around my mask with no problem. FWIW.

I am doing fine with the CPAP Contour Pillow. It is comfortable, and provides room for mask. My only preference would have it slightly more elevated. Works great for nasal and pillow masks; not sure about FF masks yet.

We use regular memory foam contour pillows. For the most part they work very well - I have had only a couple of occasions where I felt like I could "blame" the pillow for creating/contributing to the leaks I had that night. I was actually using this type of pillow long before I started pap... started using it for a pain in my neck - which I soon discovered had nothing to do with my pillow.

Yes, like 2flamingos, I also like my memory foam "contour" pillow (the softer one; I have two). I use only nasal pillows, and I'm a side sleeper. Works well for me.

Dori,

What position(s) do you sleep in?

I saw this ( http://www.contourliving.com/p-71-conto ... illow.aspx ) at an AWAKE meeting and was impressed that some designers have given CPAPers a lot of thought. It looked like it might help many side sleepers.

I am a tummy sleeper and when the sales rep heard this he started telling me how it was great for tummy sleepers - but then he started sounding like a desperate used car salesman. I don't think it would help me with tummy sleeping.

Regards,

Rooster

Hi Doric

I really like my down pillows. I use two, one lapped over the edge of the other. I fluff them up before I get into bed and put them in a kinda chris-cross position. I lay my head in the middle of the X. My mask is handy, I put it on and get the leaks out. My current mask is my favorite. It is F&HP Zest Nasal Mask. I also have Res Med Micro Mini - it is heavier than the Zest. The Zest only comes in one size, which is supposed to fit most people.

I read about the Buckwheat pillow, the water pillow, on and on. They sound really good, but I'm afraid I would like them as well as the down pillows that I am used to.

For the first four months of my apnea therapy, I used one pillows mask after another. I guess I have tender nares, they were sore all the time, eventually turning into deep open areas. I think that is the main reason my new sleep dr. changed my machine to the F&P 608. It comes with a heated hose, and what is called super humidification. The humidification healed my nares in about two weeks.

"C" you later, Jan

Here, again, for one night only...

the amazing memory foam slice and dice pillow.

This project should only be attempted w/adult supervision.

....and no fancy-schmancy electric knife needed.

I've tried them all, including the contour pillow and
keep coming back to the amazing slice and dice pillow.

YMMV

So Carbie, In which position do you sleep on that pillow?

BTW, from the new avatar, you seem to have taken up pumping carbon fiber?

I've been using two hypoallergenic synthetic down pillows from Lands' End. First I was overlapping them and sleeping with my head on the overlapped part. It still wasn't high enough in the middle, so I shoved one of these under the middle of one pillow: http://www.traversebayfarms.com/BigPicCushion.htm. It's filled with cherry pits and designed to be microwaved or frozen. It's not meant for sleeping on, but is tiding me over till my Chiroflow pillow arrives tomorrow. Surprisingly, under the down-like pillow, it's not that hard. I just saw the Regenesis pillow, and it looks interesting. Still, only so many $$ to go around.

Life's a bowl of cherries. What are you doing in the pits?

Hope your Chiroflow is on time!

I tried a buckwheat hull pillow years ago, when they first appeared on the market. It was a little too noisy for me, though.

I use the Tempur-Pedic pillow that came with my bed. Early on in my CPAP journey, I had to get used to hanging my mask off the edge of the pillow. I was using the Swift II, and the barrel of that mask was wide and would hit the pillow when sleeping on my side. Same problem with the Liberty. But I adjusted to that.

Then I found the Swift LT, and the mask is so much narrower than either of the others, I have no problems sleeping on my side and no longer have to hang my face off the edge of the pillow. I love my pillow like I love my bed.
Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.
