Confused....Was it an apnea episode or something else...
So, I woke up at 3 this morning feeling like I couldn't breathe. I shot straight up out of bed and fought with the mask until I realized what it was. I calmed down and laid back down but it took me a while to go back to sleep.
It felt just like it did before I got the CPAP. I'm turning the card into the dr's office in the morning (forgot to bring it with me today) so hopefully I will know more in a few days.
I just wonder if it was the mask on my face or if it was something else (maybe a nightmare?). I do have very lucid dreams. I will mention to dr when I bring card in.

Know what? If you have the M Series "Plus" that's in your profile, there will be no sleep information on the card.....only the amount of hours you slept.Elbysmom2004 wrote:So, I woke up at 3 this morning feeling like I couldn't breathe. If you really want to know what's happening, you need a data-capable machine......and the "Plus" ain't it.

The "M" Plus is a very good "State of the Profit Machine, what all XPAP users need it a "State of the Art Machine" that can monitor their progress. Most DME's only provide "State of the Giant Profit Margin Machines", so they can buy better toys for themselves. Jim

But in answer to your question, yes it may have been an apnea. Or it may have been your brain waking up to find a piece of plastic on your face and not immediately recognizing that it is part of the solution, not the source of the problem. It may also have been that you had an apnea that used to require a lot of "panic juice" to wake you up to breathe and now requires less of that hormonal reaction to deal with the situation, so you are left with some unused panic hormones, in a sense, that your body/brain is trying to figure out what to do with for a while. It can take a while for your body/brain to get used to the new circumstances.
But the larger issue is that you and your doctors cannot know much about the details of the effectiveness of your therapy, or the lack of effectiveness, without your using a machine that provides efficacy data.
Does that make sense?

LOL!
If my ex was still around it would be the other way around. Very funny. I don't find this a laughing matter. My DME finally got back to me and I'm getting a new machine tonight after fighting for 2 wks for it.Was your husband holding a pillow and looking guilty?

GOOD! (hopefully it's data-capable)Elbysmom2004 wrote:My DME finally got back to me and I'm getting a new machine tonight after fighting for 2 wks for it.

All kidding aside, did you used to wake up with this feeling often before cpap? It must be traumatic for sure. I am not sure that even a data capable machine would solve this particular riddle. I typically see 2-4 apneas per hour upon data review. I also can tell they are typically only 12 seconds or so in duration. I would have no way of knowing that one was 40 seconds long. And if it happened and you ripped the mask off, the data would be wacky at that point anyway.
But the data capable machine, in conjunction with the card reader and software will let you routinely watch your data and get a sense of what data correlates with what physical feelings. The software and card reader are up to you though.

Yep, unfortunatly I did. I told my PCP and he said it was nightmares since I told him it was related to me having a dream of drowning. It was very scary. I even did this during my pregnancy and now I wonder if lack of oxygen (during pg) is the cause of some of my babies health problems. I switched PCP's and she insisted I go for a sleep study. They said that I had 140 episodes per hour or something like that. I might have it wrong. I know they said 140. They also said my oxygen level dropped to 65 from 95. Very scary.

Hi, is it possible you just covered the vent somehow with a blanket, and scared your body silly by inhaling CO2?
Re: Confused....Was it an apnea episode or something else...
It sure sounds like you have long events and deep desaturations. I don't tink you are imagining anything. Sounds like a real physiological response to hypoxia. You might also consider a fingertip oximeter for $135 if you are computer savvy. It'll let you look at your O2 levels while you are on cpap and see if you are still having major desaturation events. Was great for my peace of mind when I found that the apneas I have while on cpap are not desaturating me. Just file this away for future consideration.

That would help with my son too. Where do I get one? My son has chronic lung issues. It would save in ER visits. I will save the money up for it. Thanks.

Julie, I wish it was a blanket issue. My kids are blanket and bed hogs. My son ends up with his blanket, my daughter and her dog with hers and mine. I had to learn to wrap my arms around my pillow and not let go or they ended up with my pillow too. I sleep with sweats on in order to prevent from waking up freezing!
I won't know what to do when Santa brings the beds to everyone including myself. I'm getting a cherry oak sleigh shaped daybed. I can't wait but then I can. I don't want to rush summer!
