Taking mask off in middle of night

Post by hjjsnell » Thu Jun 04, 2009 6:56 am

Has anyone else done this while asleep?? I did this last night only to find it laying beside me blowing away, so to speak. It was the weirdest thing. I can't imagine why I would have done this because I have a hard time falling asleep but once I'm asleep I don't have a problem with my mask. Anyone else? Or am I alone here?

When I first started my treatment I did this all the time. It will stop, give it time.

this is common for new users, I did it.
if it continues, tape mask to face so the pain will remind you to leave it on

I keep doing that too. I rip it off in my sleep, but somehow am awake enough to turn it off. It's really frustrating and I want to stop but I don't know what to do about it. =[

I think every hose head has done that more than once. I have, but not for a long time.

semicharmed will need to use lots of tape so an attempt at removal will really hurt

Well at least I'm not the only one that does this! Hopefully it doesn't happen again or doesn't happen for very long. Thanks everyone!

Make sure there isn't some "real" reason you are doing it. Like your pressure is so low or constricted, you feel like you aren't getting enough air.

This is very common--I struggled with it for a year. I'd be happy to give free PurSleep product samples to anyone who has "mask off" issues because it solved this very problem so well for me. Just send an email to bret@pursleep.com and include a mailing address. (I am the person behind the product and this is not a sales call--just trying to help out best I can). I've run several informal "mask off" programs with the product here on the boards with very good success and now have a low cost way to deliver product samples for people who could use them.

Hello People,

yes I have been there......"The Vanishing Mask Syndrome" I masked the tabs together, all expect the one next to my neck. So the only time I can take it off is when I awake. I had a incident when I woke myself up trying to get the mask off my face, all I did was turn over and sleep again after attempts to get it off failed.

Now after few years I can sleep with the thing on my face. Keep trying, you'll get used to wearing that mask

I switched mask types. I was wearing an F&P FlexiFit HC 431 with the quick release pull strap and kept taking it off. So I started wearing a ResMed Mirage Liberty and haven't took it off once and just keep the FlexiFit as a backup.

Well since I posted I haven't taken my mask off again at least not in the middle of the night unknowingly. I actually think I'm getting used to this darn thing! LOL Thanks for all the comments though. I have switched masks and am now on the Swift LT for her and it is working wonders. Thanks!!!

Hi! I do the same thing sometimes. I have a cat who insists on chewing my hose! So, after I yell at it for a while, I take my mask off and hide it under a blanket or something. And sometimes the hose disconnects from the machine and I try to put it back in while I'm half asleep. (I think the hose is the wrong hose for this machine. But I'll keep it for now.) And I had to go back to my old mask because the new mask leaks air where it connects. And there's nothing there to adjust it like my old mask. I like to try another mask if I could and perhaps another machine. Well, thanks for reading this. Connie

I have had trouble sleeping with the mask for about 4 or more years. Just yesterday I changed machine to S8 Auto Set II and mask to Mirage Activa LT and for the first time in years, I slept through the night without taking the mask off or waking up in a panic, feeling like I was suffocating. I even tried sleeping pills and only slept until the effects wore off. Dr. wouldn't prescribe more so I had to quit that. I actually felt good for the first time this morning.
