Using CPAP with a Sinus Infection

Post by Linus » Wed Mar 04, 2009 1:07 pm

Over the last 10 days I have had a sinus infection and it is really affecting me. I have been treated by my doctor, but I thought I would ask others what affects they have and remedies.

There are pluses and minuses with CPAP.
For one the CPAP has kept my airways open with moist filtered air. This allows the sinuses to drain.
On the negative side, I have woken up with a clogged nose and unable to breath. That part is unbearable. I am at the point where falling back to sleep without the mask is not something I want to do. I have been 100% compliant since day one and do not want to take off the mask.

I have been getting better, but gosh it sucks. I have been on an expectorant and antibiotics. I find that Nyquil works well at night until the expectorant wears off and I start to have difficulties with breathing.

What do the experts on this site do?

Wonder if it would help to put some Vicks in a dish and set it near the air intake. That might be just enough to keep the sinuses open

I use musinex-d and it seems to help a lot.

Now if I could just get rid of the cough....

I feel for you. The worst thing to me about sinus infections is that incessant residual cough for days afterward... And when you're trying to CPAP, it makes it all the worse...

When I have a sinus infection I turn the humidifier level down a bit so there's less moisture to clog up my nose.

Sinus X-Ray and diagnosis.Continue with medical options.

1/Antibiotics(Ceftin)

2/Nasal Lavage(NeilMed Rinse)

3/Corticosteroid Spray(Avamys)

4/Nasal Gel(Secaris)

Failing that,a CT scan of the head with further diagnosis.

Surgery if warranted.

Cpap is a constant,if I can't use it I set it it aside until I can, using my trusty Oximeter to make sure I don't get too far off the rails...

Scored a Mirage Quattro FFM too,in place of the usual Swift LT.Luxury.

I think this is a ongoing problem and I use saline to sort of flush out my sinuses. It is what my doctor said to do and it works pretty well.

I got myself a NeilMed Neti Pot. It makes a huge difference. I feel so much better already after using it two times today!

I live in Michigan and have had two sinus colds since the end of March. I got over the first one without going to a doctor. When I got the second one, I decided to go to the doctor. He gave me a prescription for Flonaise and Amoxcillian. I also had him take some x-rays of my sinus cavities. I am five days into taking these medications and they are helping me. I also had a very bad coughing spell last Friday and Saturday! How is everyone else fairing with these types of colds! Is there some kind of outrbreak going on here? Chuck Hill, Southfield, MI
