List Admin Question

Post by plr66 » Tue May 19, 2009 5:46 pm

Sorry fellow list-folks. I realize this is a small issue, but yesterday & today I have had to manually refresh my home page for this list after returning from reading a thread (ie: the messages do not update automatically nor show "read" messages as having been read. Also, when I hit the small box icon to the left of the subject, I am no longer taken to the newest post, as would be expected. I have to wade through the entire page to find where the newer posts begin). This is all new, and was never necessary before. I also had a weird period of about an hour this morning when my entire home page here showed on a different computer in black with non-readable lighter print. If this is a computer issue unique to me (in 2 locations), please let me know. I have not experienced any other weird stuff with any other computer tasks today.

I am sure it would help to know your exact link address for your home page.

For me, that last 2 days, I noticed whenever I go into chat - my machine gets sooo slow its just about unuseable. I thought it was on my end. Using Firefox ver 3.0.10

Gumby, I use Internet Explorer. CPAP-Sleep-Apnea-Forum.html
And another weird thing just happened as I went to get that link, but I can't even explain it. Patience with me, please!

Is no one else having this problem? Anyone know how I can fix it? Been on this list for a long time and never had it happen...but it' still doing it.

Rumor has it some mentioned having the slow pc problem when in chat last nite. Guess none took the time to post here. I still have it today, too. My guess is some changes have been made.

Yuk. I really hope these things can be corrected! Just takes a lot more time and attention to figure out what posts I've read, finding the newest ones, and having to keep refreshing after returning to the list page. Sigh~~ Life can be tough, can't it??

I'm fairly new, but how do you tell if you have read a message? Every time I come into the blog I just look down the list and read the ones I think are new.... sorry if this has been repeated, but I'd appreciate a reply....

This one I just figured out yesterday myself.
Look on the left side of the main forum where all the topics are listed. Then look between a poster's avator and the topic title, right above the letter "b" in by whoever started the topic. There is a very small square of some sort (can't see it clearly to say what it is) and this indicates unread or new posts if you hover mouse cursor over it. Also, if topic has more than one page if you over over the page number it will say either new posts or no new posts.

That little box to the left of the subject line used to disappear once I read the most recent posts on the thread and returned to the home list page. It doesn't do that anymore for me. Does it for the rest of you?

It does for me. Shows up unread post, takes me directly to the unread post, I go read the post, go back to the main topic page via the links (not using the back navigation arrow button, box won't disappear then, not supposed to as back up arrow is simply "backup") and then the box is gone so I know that I have read all the posts. Then it reappears again if there is a new post and I have come back from reading a new post or even simply refreshed the main topic page.

I thought I understood on your first comment about this that you had to manually refresh the page but I didn't understand how you were getting back to the main page. The links provided at the top and bottom of post page take me back to main topic page and I get refreshed at the same time. You didn't mention the back navigation arrow being used but if that is the case, it is not designed to refresh but you probably already knew that.

If your steps mirror mine by using the links back to main topic page, I don't know what to say if you still have to manually refresh to see any unread posts anywhere. No one else seems to have mentioned it. I wonder if it is a cookie retaining thing. I don't understand all the mechanics of website cookies but they are needed in many ways and especially to keep track of what we have read and not read. Did you make any recent changes in your security on your computer or cookie settings? Just a thought, I don't know if cookies are your issue but I know on my other forum that I host, we had the cookies available for our members to see unread posts. Since I have multiple subforums it saves in having to go to each area individually to see unread posts. We utilized a bit of coding to make use of the cookies to let us see new posts in a backwards sort of fashion. If it is a cookie issue cpap website may not be able to recognize the cookie needed to tell it where you have been without refreshing.

All supposition on my part but I am sort of a computer person that just found out she had sleep apnea and that is why I am here.

I'm not having any problems. The boxes appear and work fine. You may want to try deleting your saved cookies. Go to Tools, then Internet Options, and on the General tab under Browsing History, click Delete. After doing so, you'll probably have to log into the site again. Whenever I've had unexplained problems with online forums, deleting my cookies usually fixes things.

I also am having problems with the chat. It is locking up IE and the only way to correct it is to close all the browsers.

I use this site on a variety of computers. Some run Windows 2000. Some run Linux (Fedora 10). All use Firefox. Other than some internet-related issues, I don't often have problems with this site. It is set up a little different than most web forums I use (and they mostly use 'vbulletin', which this site does not, so its differences are noticeable).

I am wondering on the reverse video problem you had, if you hadn't accidentally clicked and dragged a little, selecting some or all of the page. This happens to me every once in a while, and is remidied by just going to a non-black area and clicking.

I continue to have problems with chat. I'm guessing that is why people don't go there anymore. It just uses up ALL memory so you can't do anything else.

I haven't had the issue you described in your first post, but I do have issues with the speed of the chat feature. I recently doubled my pc's memory, and I still have trouble with the chat most of the time. It was faster last night, for some reason, but it's often excruciatingly slow and frustrating.
