Encore and Windows XP....a match made in H-ll????

Post by yawn » Tue Aug 30, 2005 8:53 pm

Has anybody else encountered problems with Windows XP and Encore Pro?? I keep getting an error message when I try to connect to the Card Reader...somebody suggested it might be because of our operating system. Anybody????
Thanks..Amy

I have never had any problem with Windows XP and EncorePro (or MyEncore).

(Of course now that I've written it down in black and white, I'm bound to experience some horrible computer disaster..

Does the small light on the card reader turn green when you put the card in? You are putting it in correctly? Sometimes I have trouble with my card reader and have to adjust the card until the light turns green. Sometimes it still doesn't work and I have to pull the card out and reinsert it until it will work. Usually if I push it all the way to the back of the card reader it doesn't work, I have to pull it out slightly. Keep trying, the light should be green when it reads it. I am running windows xp professional with the Encore software and the infineer reader.

Never had any problems with mine.

Make sure the SQL Server and Service Manager are started before you start up the card reader (Infineer Reader Utility). I have mine as separate icons on my Desktop and start them up in that order.....then I start up the Encore Pro.

It's been since the middle of May since I installed mine, so the "details" of what all I did and installed are a little fuzzy at this point in time.....I really wasn't taking notes cause it installed pretty well.

Good luck.

no problems with Encore Pro and my XP machine, but I do have the cruddy serial version of the card reader, NOT the USB version.

just never ever accidentally delete the SQL server which does show up as an intruder on some spyware filter software.

Snork, I use Adaware, Spybot S&D and Spyware Doctor, not to mention my Symantec has it, too. What does it come up as so I know if I ever see it? Is there an obvious indication that that is what it is or does it have an unusual name in those programs where it does appear?

Wulfman, what is that about? I never do anything but click on my desktop icon for Encore Pro and it starts right up. Why do you go through that process? I am on Windows XP, too.

Lori,
The Microsoft SQL Server runs as a "service" in the background, and is set up by Encore Pro to start up automatically - that is why you never see it.

MSSQL Server has been associated with some security issues in the past, and many people opt to start it manually only when they are using Encore Pro/MyEncore then turn it off again. You can change this through the Control Panel -? Administative Tools -> Services.

If you opt to start/stop it manually you can access it though the Control Panel, or by an icon on the System Tray (right hand corner of the Task Bar),

Derek - what does it mean when it says Unable to load MSDE sucessfully. Please contact Respironics for support. Then when we run Encore Pro it is of course unable to connect to data base server. We have XP home version. We emailed Respironics and they said that they are happy to assist their home care providers. I porvide home health care to myself but I'm sure that doesn't count!

Any advise will be appreciated.

Unfortunately not. Which opens up another area of discussion as to why, even though we purchase their product retail, they will not offer support. This is the first time I've heard of any such type of non-customer care. Between that and what is going on with sthnreb's machine, I am really starting to strongly dislike Respironics...

Lori - I agree. I find it unbelievable that they will not let us get this data. With my insulin pump not only can I get software which they gave to me for free (I just had to buy the equipment to download), I can see the information on my pump. I can also change settings on the pump or through the software. You can't tell me that I can't do more damage to my self with the wrong dosage of insulin than I could do with the wrong CPAP pressure!

I would like to know what their justification is.

Laurie,

Perhaps the justification would be the bottom line on their financial statement if they had to provide support to the layman and pay employees to serve in that function.

Derek - I changed MSSQLServerADHelper to be automatic rather than manual. Is there anything else I should change? Maybe if we try loading it again? My boyfriend has spent hours trying to set this up for me (I don't have the energy yet which is why I'm anxious to see this data so I know what's happening to me while I sleep).

We do have McAfee software - do we need to turn something off with that before we load?

Thanks,
Laurie

Laurie (not Lori ),

This is the same problem that Fifi was having a couple of moths ago - the solution was to make sure that File/Printer sharing was turned on. Here is my response to Fifi - see if it helps you.
As many of you will have read in her thread, Fifi and I have been struggling for the past few days to get Encore Pro running on her computer. Each time she would get a message:

"Unable to Load MSDE successfully Please Contact Respironics For Support."

and of course we all know that Respironics will not assist end-users.

I'm pleased to report that we have fixed the problem It is not documented anywhere in the Encore Pro instructions, so I will outline it here in case others have the same problem.

It turns out that in order for the Microsoft SQL Desktop Server (MSDE) to install and function in Windows XP you must have File and Printer Sharing enabled in your networking set-up. This is an option that you set up when you configure your computer for networking and, although it may seem strange, it makes sense when you understand how a SQL server works.

If you have this problem when installing, go to
Settings -> Network Connections -> Local Area Connection
and click the Properties... item under the General tab. On the next window, in the box under the General tab you should see a checked item "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks"
If it is not there you must install it as follows:
1) Click the Install... button.
2) On the next window click on Service to highlight it, then click the Add... button.
3) On the next window click on File and Printer Sharing and OK

This should do it, and you should now be able to install Encore Pro.

Good luck.

Derek - I just saw this on the other post, so I'll try it.

We do have File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks and it is checked but I can't check on properties - could this be set up differently?

Thanks so much!
Laurie
