warm weather mask discomfort
warm weather mask discomfort
I live in Oklahoma, we are having some very warm nights. My husband does not like sleeping with air conditioner on until summer, high bills etc. The ceiling fan was no help for my face, even though he and I both sleep comfortably with the ceiling fan on medium.
The past few nights have been unbearably hot with my nasal mask on. I would wake up sweating from my forehead pad and feeling smothered. I tried lowering my humidifier then turned it off, resulting in waking with a VERY dry throat.
Last night I placed a small desk size fan on my night table next to my CPAP machine. It made my intake air seem cooler and helped the overall heat I was feeling wearing my mask.
I wanted to pass along this tip in case it may work for someone else.

Good idea! And it will give me something to do with that little fan I bought that never seems to be the right one anywhere I've tried to use it. We've had only one really warm night yet, but it definitely made for problems with my mask. I didn't like the too-warm air blowing in my face, and I woke up in the night with my mask sliding around on the perspiration like it was on ice. I'll try the fan suggestion, thanks!

Its been warm here and my FF mask has suddenly gotten wicked hot and sweaty. I turned off the heat on the humidifier and it seems to help. I have only been a pap'r since Octobers, so this is my first spring/summer.

Dry throat is a symptom of mouthbreathing/leaking. You may need a Full Face mask.schnauzers3 wrote: ...... I tried lowering my humidifier then turned it off, resulting in waking with a VERY dry throat.

This is my first spring season on Cpap too. Quite a different deal than sleeping in a cool room with a down comforter. The fan is working good for now and hope this suggestion will help others too.

I sleep with a small fan blowing directly on my face year round and it really seems to help me get to sleep and keeps my face cool as well. I started on BiPap almost three years ago in August, and thought I was going to die from the heat of having the mask on my face...didn't take me too long to get the fan blowing on me!!

Re: warm weather mask discomfort
This is my first spring/summer.... with CPAP....I got a (floor) fan for the bedroom (bouncing the airflow off the ceiling, since bedroom ceiling is too low to hang a ceiling fan on it). If I have the AC going it gets the cool air to me (since floor register is at opposite end of room where I put the fan) and things are good. But, if I don't have AC going....well, it has been pretty bad the last few nights. It was particularly moist under the headgear last night. But, I resisted getting up and turning the A/C on.
It is only like 60F overnight, but with all the rain that has fallen and threatening to fall....it is very humid. The one night I gave in, had me waking up shivering....but at least I slept a good chunk of time.
Guess I may have to look at a more direct fan to head setup. Though I usually don't like that feeling.....
Yet another expense I don't have the budget for....

I was starting to think about that subject myself. We've had warm nights, but nothing real hot yet. Maybe we need to run the hose through an ice pack, like a keg of beer in the summer...
Last night I was more concerned with sleeping on my side, using a full face mask, a few hours after having a wisdom tooth removed. I woke up with a bloody face and mask, since there was still residual bleeding.

Good tip for warm weather. Dorigaryland wrote:Wulfman wrote:Gary,
Hawthorne and I tried giving you a suggestion before.......use distilled water in your humidifier tank but NO HEAT. As I said, I even keep my distilled water in the refrigerator so it's even cooler. It adds a little humidity to the air and cools the air even more.

The desk fan I am using is horizontal about 16" tall with a split air flow. The top portion can be turned to the side so when oscillating you get changing air flow. That keeps the air from being directly on my face, which works better for me.
It is also very quiet, does not add very much noise level. Also, it was very cost effective, about 16.00 at Walmart.
I tried using the humidifier without heat but I got a very dry spot in my throat, resulting in having to get a drink of water, then on to the bathroom. I surely do not want to risk waking up the 3 schnauzers. But that is another post for another day.

We're OKIES too - My husband uses a CPAP and he would wake up sweaty with the mask straps and forehead pad sticking to his face and leaving 'strap marks'. Check out http://www.strapsoftie.com for a comfort accessory that is SUPER!
Re: warm weather mask discomfort
I'm embarassed to tell you what I do at night to stay cool.
I was always a "hot sleeper", but adding the mask made it unbearable.
We keep the AC on all year round at 68. I have a fan that clips to my headboard and blow on my face. I also have a fan on the night stand that I got at Sharper Image that's called the Oxygen Fan.
All that ,in addition to a celing fan on medium high above me.
I have only a sheet and an ultra, ultra light tropical weight breathable comforter, which I throw off of me periodically throughout the night.
Hubby is a champ and deals with it. The Yorkie hates it!!

Re: warm weather mask discomfort
This is my first spring with the CPAP, and it's been a real struggle getting comfortable for the last week. I also have to sleep with the AC on, as well as a ceiling fan and a floor fan. If I don't have cool air blowing in my face, I can't tolerate the mask. In the winter, I had to turn the humidifier up to 3 in order to not have mouth leakage, but now that the nights are getting warmer, I'm considering dropping it back down to a 2. The tip about refrigerating the distilled water sounds like a good one that I'll try out this evening.
