Yahoo at last I got my machine

Post by Restlessdave » Fri Apr 24, 2009 8:17 pm

Hi all
Had my titration study last wednesday. Results were Apnea Index 0.0 at final pressure of 14, 12 Hypopneas final AHI 2.4. Quite an improvement on previous sleep study with AHI 116. Before14.1% of sleep below 88% oxygen saturation, on CPAP O% spent below 88%

The local DMU called yesterday and I got an appointment this afternoon where I got a copy of the titration results. I got different products to what I researched but I am happy with them so far! The salesman was a CPAP user himself and it was interesting to hear his experiences. He told me about 4 months into using the CPAP he experienced vivid dreams! Anyone agree with that?

He had a Mirage Activa nasal mask in stock which I asked for but he suggested I try a Swift LT with Nasal Pillows. It was comfortable and not at all what I expected. The airflow sensor which I wore for my first sleep study poked hard into my nose which hurt for a week afterwards as I tossed and turned but the nasal pillows are really soft and there is a lot less area to seal. My only worry is that it is so light I am going to have a lot of leaks or knock it away from my nose. Guess I will find out shortly. Its nice I can wear my glasses so I can see when I knock the machine over and even to turn it on. I have 30 days to change my mind if it doesnt work. Have got the distilled water for the humidifier and everything set up and of course I am not tired now!

I noticed one thing when I tried on this mask.... It blows a constant torrent of air straight out the front so if the cat or dog think they are going to sit any where near my face they are in for a shock. Just hope I dont blow the wife out of bed when I turn over....hehe.

The DMU salesman was telling me the biggest problem getting a good seal is caused by the skins natural oils which build up on the nasal pillows. Does everyone wash the mask in soapy water every day or is there some kind of wipe which I can buy at the supermarket or pharmacy to speed things up? I asked at the local pharmacy but the only advice she could offer was read the instruction book!!!! Ive heard about going the extra mile but I would'nt credit that more than 6 inches or so.

Wifes watching TV in bed, Dogs waiting patiently for me to do the same and the cats already asleep waiting until the lights go out before she tries to wake me up again so I am going to get the mask on and see if I can fall asleep.

Sweet Dreams everyone.

Well, I was going to impart some wisdom so brilliant that it could make your entire apnea experience just a wonderful piece of fluff for the rest of your life but since you are going to bed I will save it for someone else. Good night.

Ugh! 10 days after my titration and I'm still waiting for mine! I called the doctor Thursday and he is on vacation again (he's ALWAYS on vacations it seems) and can't do anything about it until he gets back.

I hope everything goes well for you!

I use dawn dish washing liquid to clean my mask, then a soak of 1:3 white vinegar and water(5 mins is good) to be sure there is no soap or skin oil residues left. Then I rinse well, shake hard, and it's good for that night.
For quick daily cleaning you can use special wipes made for this purpose like these;
https://www.cpap.com/simple-find-cpap-p ... wipes.html

or...I use these;
http://www.amazon.com/Antiseptic-Cleans ... 987&sr=8-1

Some drug stores carry these items some don't, but they can order them for you and have them in a day or two.

Thanks for the support folks.
Not easy getting used to CPAP is it Nose was clear, I kept my mouth shut, did'nt fight the breathing or panic like in the titration study but I just could'nt get on with the Nasal Pillows. The slightest movement and I had roaring leaks. Humidity was fine but the pressure on my nose made it really sore. I woke up every two hours and walked around the house, layed back down and fiddled with the mask trying to reduce the pressure without much success. I dont have a headboard and I had to lay on the hose to stop it moving and pulling the mask. I was checking the instructions at the resmed site as I didnt get any with the mask and I see there is a clip you can get which holds the hose to the headband which I think will help. Tried to sleep this afternoon with it again as a mornings work in the yard got me pooped but my nose is still too sore and when the mask moved again causing extreme discomfort I tried to sleep without it and of course I couldnt get to sleep. Grrrrrr And another thing!!!!! Went to check to see if I had any leaks recorded on the machine and the damn dmu guy hasnt enabled the menus for apneas, leaks etc although he enabled the ones for compliance and sessions etc which are of no interest to me. To me thats like buying a Ferarri and then having it restricted to 25 miles an hour. The guy must have a hole in his head where his brain should be if he thinks leaving out the machines data functions is going to help or encourage me to keep trying. I cant keep taking time off work to drive 30 miles to the docters recommended dmu otherwise I would take it back monday and give him hell. Anyone know how to enable the AHI and leak functions on the menu for a Remstar Pro?

Impart away Brushy Hollow Bill theres always another day to deal with. I hope Krazykchan you dont have to wait too much longer. Its really frustrating when you read how important the CPAP machine is for some of us and then when all the hard work is done by the sleep study people your doctor is awol and not around to sign on the dotted line.

Thanks Brenda for the advice on the medicated towelettes. Just what I want and a good price too. Thanks also for the encoragement from Lee Lee and Dyanna.

I'm going to try again tonight and tomorrow but if my nose isnt settling down by Monday I am going to see about getting the Mirage LT nasal mask. The dmu salesman asked me to tip my head back so he could look at my nostrils and declared a medium size pillow was required but I wonder if I need a large. Shame I have to wait two more nights to find out. How are any of us supposed to know what mask we want without being able to try to sleep in them???? Could'nt we have at least two to take home?

We are expecting thunderstorms for the next 4 nights so lets hope my machine doesnt get zapped too. I think it would probably bring a smile to my face to hand a melted machine back to the dmu salesman and say would you enable all the read only menus for me on the next one

Lowes and Home Depot sell a velcro two sided tie wrap in their electrical section. It sticks to itself and with a safety pin, you can make all the hose ties that you want to tie the mask to your clothing or bed sheets! It comes in a nice roll of about 50 ties.

I use IVORY Diswashing liquid and warm water and soak it for about 20 to 30 minutes in a bucket I bought from Lowe's for about a buck, I also bought a finger nail cleaning brush ( at Walmart) for about another buck to gently clean the nasal pillows on my swift 11 mask and that works great, it smells so nice and fresh, kinda makes me look forward to hosing up, lol...
