Mask Woes

Post by Ruby Vee » Thu Apr 23, 2009 7:09 pm

I read this forum incessantly before I got my machine, and I KNOW I read a thread (or maybe just a post) about how to properly get your mask fitted for the night. I have red marks that aren't going away EVER on the sides of my nose, and now I have lumps, too. I don't think I'm wearing my mask too tight -- I can easily get my hand under the straps -- but my nose thinks differently. It's been like this for the better part of the 10 days I've been a CPAPer, but today it HURTS. I soak my mask cushions in mild soap and water for an hour every morning, and then rinse them and let them air dry. I do have sensitive skin, but this is ridiculous! Any tips?

I haven't used that mask, but you know of the masks I have used, I frequently have to readjust them in the night. I think I toss around a lot in my sleep. Sometimes it can take a lot of fiddling to get it right. Also, maybe this just isn't the mask for you and you would be more comfortable with a different type. I highly recommend the simplicity!

I suggest you may want to try a Resmed Mirage Activa. The mask is designed to have the straps loose. Two finger spacing on the sides of your face - I love this mask very comfortable on the ol beak!

Or you can purchase pad a cheeks which are padding for your straps if that is what is causing the redness. But if it is the mask cushion the Mirage Activa is one way to go.

Another is to try a Nasal Pillow mask or Nasal Prongs - that way nothing is pressing on your bridge of your nose.

Sorry for the blatant endorsement of the Mirage Activa. It is a very comfortable mask with three cushion sizes and I believe there is Mirage Activa Light which has a smaller cushion. The only problem is you have to determine which cushion size you need. That can be a bit tricky. Cpap.com has a sizing guide and if you buy from them purchase the mask insurance that way if the mask doesn't work for you, you can return it.

the way you want to fit that mask is to tilt the forhead support as far back as it will go,(angle toward your forehead) now put the mask on and snug the head gear till its comfortable turn the machine on and cause of the way the forhead support is you will have leaking from the mask on the bridge of your nose. all you need to do is adjust the forehead support forward till the leak stops this method ensure's a good seal with minimal pressure on the bridge of the nose. All resmed mask are fit best this way, except the original ultra mirage FF.
