Ugh, how much longer do I have to wait!

Post by krazykchan » Tue Apr 21, 2009 6:04 am

It will be two weeks on Wednesday since I got my CPAP titration done. How much longer should I have to wait to get a call from the doc?

Yesterday where my migraine was so bad I felt dizzy, had cold sweats, dry heaved, and just couldn't function. I'm sick of these migraines. The doc thinks that the lack of quality sleep is causing them. I don't want to have to keep skipping classes because of these migraines. I'm still feeling the affects of the migraine I had yesterday. All the pain pills in the world just don't help.

I need to start therapy now!

Now a question:
Does anyone ever had a problem with their cats messing with their machine? I have two cats and no nightstand next to my bed. If I set the machine on the floor will the cats leave it alone? I have an 8 month old kitten right now that likes to get into everything and cries her head off if I don't let her in the bedroom at night.

I understand what you are going through. I often woke up with migraines. I found out after my sleep study that my oxygen level went down to 63% (normal is between 97 and 99 %) a person with O2 sat of 83% would be presribed oxygen. It like your brain is starving for oxygen. I would be quite the pest when it came to reminding my doctor. Sometimes the squeaky wheel get there CPAP machine. I have been on CPAP for 7 months and have not had a migraine since. As for your second question I have cats and they do not bother with the machine. They are older cats so I do not know about kittens.

Can you not pick up a cheapo nightstand at a local flea market, or even use a couple of milk crates with a flat top? If nothing else, a kitten's claws can nick the hose and cause leaks that way, even if it can't reach up to the top of the bed otherwise.

There is no room for a night stand. The heater is right next to the bed. We actually do have a nightstand but it is on the far wall. My bedroom layout kinda sucks.

The kitten is still training to get used to SoftPaws but once she's trained on those she won't be able to scratch at anything. I'm just more afraid of them attacking it or sitting it on it.

None of my cats have shown more than a passing interest in the machine or the hose. However, I do have on who loves the mask exhaust. She's gone as far as straddling my head to get it to blow on just the right spot. She's a bit of a psycho tortie though. Her behavior should not usually be considered normal cat behavior.

It took two weeks for me to get mine, and like you I thought they were the loooooonnngest weeks of the year. There is nothing wrong with calling the doc and reminding them that you are waiting, and asking when you can expect your machine. Sometimes the ball does get dropped.

As far as your cats go, my guess would be that the first time they put their little paws in the blower button and turn the machine on they will run for cover. If not, you could try putting a cardboard box or styrofoam cooler on top of it with holes cut out for air intake and the hose. That should keep them off. Good luck!

My concern is sitting the unit on the floor. It will pick up dust and such alot faster. Recommendations I think are at least 2 feet off the floor. (correct me if I am wrong anyone) I encourage you to rig up something to sit it on- a stack of books, milk crate etc just something to move it off of floor.
My cat also LOVES the blowing air LOL She also comes up and sniffs it every night. I am worried she is gonna try to sleep on my face LOL So far she hasn't done that!

Like the other poster said, it's ok to call your dr to find out if they have the study back yet. I was told that it took approximately 10 business days. So you should be hearing something anytime. I have been on therapy for about a month now and feel like the world is right again. But with both of my studies it was around 10 days.

About the machine, hope that heater is not going to blast right on it. Don't know what type of heater you have, just wondering how that would affect performance and humidification.

In spaces as narrow as 8 inches, a retired old style computer tower can double as a table for machines that are no bigger than that in either width or length. Some of us have at least one old computer in our basement - does that count as recycling? I wouldn't recomment too narrow a table in a larger space just due to stability issues and increased risk of the dreaded fall if not secured.

I used to leave my nasal pillows mask laying at the head of my bed till one day maybe a year into my treatment I caught my cat batting it around like a cat toy. Can't say for sure, but may have been how a pinhole got in my hose. Now I remove the temptation.

Hope yout get your results and equipment soon and get started with treatment.

Kathy

Now I have an image of a cat straddling someone's face mask stuck in my head. Cats are silly.

I have a milk crate that I can dig up from downstairs. It's not like it's that hard to move in the morning.

And thanks.

It's a water based heater. Those big ugly white metal ones that old apartments tend to have. If I could move it I would. I could always move the bed if I absolutely have too. I just like sleeping by a window.

I'll probably have to put up my mask in the morning. I doubt my kitten will leave it alone. EVERYTHING is a toy for her at this point.

We have four cats and two dogs. Only the cats get on the bed. One loves to sleep with me, and is totally unfazed by my mask and the vent. She'll plop down and sometimes cover the vent completely. It isn't too big a deal, a little rearranging works fine. She had been declawed by someone, but the other three still have claws - usually sharp! They haven't messed with the mask yet. The hose has a cover and I put the mask in the Resmed drawstring bag. One dog is an ancient beagle who couldn't care less (or reach anything). The other dog (a humane society mixed dog) is new and can reach anything. I am keeping my fingers crossed about him, but so far he seems uninterested.

I think a CPAP hose snaking around on the floor would be a LOT more temptation than the average kitten could resist. Even if he can't get it with his claws, he may try to tackle and bite it. Neither of my cats has any interest at all in my equipment, although the first night one of them encountered the mask exhaust he flew off the bed like his tail was on fire! If you have $$ for furniture, you might want to look for one of those very narrow chair side tables. Or maybe the old bricks and a board bookshelf idea? I'm surprised you can sleep that close to a radiator (which is what those big metal heaters are called) -- when I get stuck in a spot like that, I feel like I'm frying by morning!

Uh...my cat bit my tube and I found the punctures (2) when I was washing it out. It is very difficult to close these leaks. I tied a fat rubber band around the holes. Trying a hose cover...
