Yeah, we used to say that about smoking 'em back in the day, too.

Battered bananas fried in oil & delivered with ice cream - I still order that dish when I can - it is quite common in some Chinese restaurants but can be bought in traditional cafes too.

DSM
For somebody like me who grew up with bananas growing in my back yard in a lush tropical paradise called Kerala, this was my favorite dessert, w/o the ice cream. The bananas as we have in the West is not the right type for this, one needs the very starchy variety. In the West that is called plantains; but in Kerala it is kind of the reverse; but we have a third variety which are smaller and less starchy we call the plantains. In fact Kerala has no less than about 10 distinct varieties of bananas/plantains; similar to apples here. Since coconut was the other universal prolific item, the bananas had to be fried in conconut oil, otherwise it was not authentic And it had to be rice batter, since no wheat grew in that tropical climate.

Actually it was eye candy for koppy

We have built in retribution in our project. There will be an international law that will penalise anyone guilty of deliberately inflicting on others the smell, taste or sight of bananas. I understand the law will be retrospective, so be warned.

And the penalty - Being banished to Sydney, Australia. With shingles.

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

Hmmmm

Sydney vs Melbourne,
wellllll there was a time that Sydney with its glorious weather & coastline full of beaches with golden sand & many large & interesting rivers bays & coves, would laugh at Melbourne with its perennial wet weather & cloudy skies & polluted port phillip bay **BUT** of late, it is Melbourne with the hot dry weather & Sydney getting all the rain.

So

Maybe Melbourne has an advantage (shopping for clothes in the heart of the city is better than in Sydney which has its good shops all to far away from each other)

DSM

(who spent a time in Melbourne on an Air Force base that back then hosted the USA 57th Weather Reconn squadron (U2 Spy Planes )

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/57th_Recon ... e_Squadron (see the stations they served at - one is listed as Avalon Vic Australia but the planes flew out from Laverton Vic Australia where we were and that was in 1964). The U2, a cigar tube with glider wings & a mighty big engine

#2 Interesting - the 57th don't list having U2s in their squadron - just like they don't mention being at Laverton ???. They do list the WB-57 Canberra which was named after Australia's capital (but is really a B-57 from Martin). But I think they had two U2s at Laverton. The pilots were skinny & stood about 5ft tall & looked like kids. The U2s were used to monitor activities over Indonesia back when there was 'communist' insurgency in Malaysia & Borneo. Sukarno was the president of Indonesia at the time & was flirting with Maoist China. A couple of years later a coup toppled Surkano & put Suharto in power. He was very pro US. He lasted until about 12 years ago. So many stories to tell about that strange period

PS, we Aussies used to claim the symbol in the middle of the emblem of the 57th was an Aussie boomerang - they always came back (hopefully).

#2 I knew the planes I saw weren't mirages - here is the actual deployment and aircraft # and it was 1st at Laverton, then at Avalon, then back to Laverton. 1960-1966

http://www.ais.org/~schnars/aero/ol-det.htm Look for OL-11

When the plane landed after a mission, a jeep chased it down the runway & as it slowed to a halt they clipped a wheel onto one wing as the plane only had a wheel up front & one towards the rear in the body & if the wing wheel wasn't clipped on the plane would just tip over (but at next to no speed) just like any glider does.

Now, so far, with you all the way.

Now hang on just a darn tooting minute there!

Babs, historically you are correct. We're not all descended from convicts, but nevertheless it's there in our history & most English, Scottish or Irisch-descended people's backgrounds somewhere or other.

But the difference between Sydney and Melbourne is that Sydney was established as the first penal colony. Stands to reason the best, brightest and "celebrity criminals" came here, and the rabble to Melbourne. Sydney is a diverse, fun-loving, sun drenched, tolerant, gay-loving community on one of the best deep water harbours in the world, with one of the best gay mardi parades in the world. We have a world-class opera house and that wonderful harbour bridge. We don't mind admitting our heritage. We don't mind where you come from, even Melbourne. Melbourne is the little sister with a superiority complex - do I need to explain any further?

And BTW even with with a shingles-ridden population we can still beat Queensland in the State of Origin (football).

This thread just went form being entertaining to also being fascinating and educational. So what American wouldn't love to visit both Sydney and Melbourne?

And to give an idea of proximity, flight time between those two world-renowned cities is well under two hours.

Babs,

Then move to Japan

Was in Kyoto once with a group from IBM & we had been sightseeing & were back at the station. Big line of women outside the ladies & no queue at the mens. As we were in their (the mens) a trickle of women wandered in & out going to & from the spare mens toilets, often with kids in tow. Locals took no notice.

On an earlier trip (many years earlier - mid 1980s) was at MiyaJima, an Island near Hiroshima. Was wandering around this national park & saw toilets in the distance - wandered in & was employing a urinal when a woman wandered past. Seems in outlying areas the toilets are mixed & there is nothing surrounding the urinals & no doors on the cubicles. But, as mentioned, the locals take no notice of such oddities (odd to us that is).

Nah... an experiential trip to Japan as DSM suggested is the ticket!

Hey, give me enough beer, and I can acquit myself quite nicely! Even missed peeing on my legs that one time! Subsequent sober attempt left legs, socks, and hiking boots soaked. Hiking partner not thrilled with scent of peed on extremities for rest of trip.

As for Penal Colonies, I have no room to talk. My ancestry is Scottish, displaced to Ireland, displaced to the Penal Colony of Georgia. I just couldn't resist digging back at Koppy.

B.

Australia a penal colony ?

Still is - some cities never lost their origins. Sydney is the classic.

Leave anything laying around for too long in Sydney (including the clothes on your line) & they disappear - cars, bikes, clothes, tools, bags, children !!!
We had to stop using clothes lines & switch to tumble dryers & even they have to be in a secure room

Today Sydney is the home for new criminals from the middle east & everywhere else that is desperate to get rid of them. The Lebanon war supplied us with a whole new generation of car converters & rebirthers, Vietnam sent us its best gamblers & drug dealers, Hong Kong sent us the cream of their triads Somalia is sending us relatives of warlords - they are all sooo welcome here - a home from home & among like minded citizens.

Add to the convict origins, the Irish fenians & criminals - noted for their disdain for authority (esp British authority) and you have the Australian character summed up nicely.
