Can you use a chinstrap with full face mask?

Post by FatiguedMe » Mon Apr 06, 2009 10:37 am

I have the Mirage Ultra and also the Comfort Full Gel mask, both size mediums (also large in Gel one). My chin sits back so when I fall alseep my jaw drops back and mouth springs open. Dr told me the other day that full face can force mouth to open. If I tighten any more I am gonna hurt my face. I have tightened and loosened!
Anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do or does anyone else have this problem and can you recommend a different mask. I have ugly nose problems and I can't do the nasal pillows or mask. I need help big time because I know relief is in sight, I can feel a lil difference even with my issues.
I also have a cold right now and that is NO FUN!
Goin into 4 weeks and waiting for the light at the end of the tunnel!
Thank you Fatigued!
P.S. Kteague I have managed to stay off of my back too!

I use a chinstrap with my UMFF mask. Works for me!

I don't know, since I've never managed to use a FFM. I use the Nasal Aire II with a chinstrap, and I'm doing really well. You might consider a chinstrap/nasal mask combo, if you can't get the FFM to seat well and keep your mouth closed.

Good luck!!!!

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

I use a Chinstrap with my full Face Mask. If I don't my mouth gets so dry I have to peal my cheeks off my teeth in the morning.

What chinstrap do you use, Tom?

I like my Deluxe Chinstrap from https://www.cpap.com. I just ordered the new version Ruby Adjustable Chinstrap from them, as well. I liked the Topaz, but that neoprene did not get along with my facial skin.

Cheers,
B.

normally i use the Swift LT but i recently tried the quattro FFM and found that i leak like crazy with it because it forces my jaw to open.
I need to have a few nights with my Swift before i go back and try the quattro with a chinstrap.

I use full face masks at high pressure (19 cmH2O) and have the same problem with my mouth blowing wide open. I use the PAPcap for chin support. Its not as flexibal as a normal chin strap and gives much more support.

I use the Premium Chinstrap from Respironics. Its what the DME sent me when I called and asked for a chinstrap.

So funny... I HATE that one! It won't stay on me, and is too hot.

LOL,

Can someone please explain to me why you'd use a strap or anything else to keep your mouth closed if you're wearing a FF mask? The whole point of the mask is to ALLOW you to open your mouth without fear of losing the 'good' air. Am I missing something? I use an UM FF myself.

Well, some people find that the FFM leaks when they open their mouth, but they like the way the FFM feels, as opposed to nasal or pillows or prongs masks.

That's my assumption, anyway. I've heard other people say they do well with a FFM, but if their mouth drops open, they get very bad dry mouth, so they prefer to keep it closed, either with a chinstrap or by the mask itself - like the Hybrid and Liberty seem to have built-in chincups.

Cheers,
B.

I can understand your confusion, Julie. I did not expect to need one when I started therapy using a FFM. However, my pressure of 19 blows my mouth WIDE open. A FFM mask allows you to breath through your mouth, but is still not designed for a facial geometry that results from the jaw at maximum extension. It leaks like crazy. The chin strap (PAPcap in my case) doesn't keep my mouth completely closed. I have the freedom of movement to open and breath through my mouth. It just keeps my jaws from flying wide open.

I use a FF mask and a chinstrap. Before CPAP I slept with my mouth open. Now, even with a FF mask, my mouth still wants to open. When it opens, it breaks the seal and causes massive leaks. With a chinstrap my mouth doesn't open thus eliminating the leaks. You'd think that with a FF mask that a chinstrap wouldn't be necessary but some of us just have big mouths!
