Air pressure felt in tear duct and around eye

Post by dexter_go » Thu Mar 26, 2009 8:56 pm

I have been using my RESMED S8 AUTOSET II with Mirage Activa Mask for a week.

I have been noticing that early morning between 2:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. there are times that I feel that there is air inside my eye circulating. The feeling is there is air pressure that has gone inside and "circles" around and goes out the tear duct. It is not painful but it is a weird sensation that usually wakes me up. The air pressure never gets "trapped". It goes around in a circular motion inside my eye and it feels to exit in the tear duct. This also happens when my eyes are closed. This never happens when I open my eyes. There are times that this happens around 10x per night which means I am awakened each time this happens. It used to happen to both my eyes.

My prescribed pressure is 8. The machine was autoset between 4 to 12. I changed this now to autoset between 4 to 9. After this change, I can now feel this only in my left eye. Before it used to be on both eyes but not simultaneously.

Lately, I have been noticing that the occurrence is becoming less and less. I think last night I can remember it only happened around 3x. Much less as compared to before.

Why is this happening? And do others also feel the same thing?

I was just talking with my eye doctor about this today and he said it's fairly common for his cpap patients. One possible remedy is to have the silicone plugs installed in your tear ducts (I had that done several years ago for general dry eye issues).

Another thing that another papper and I have been toying with a bit is a wheat filled eye pillow. Sounds kind of weird but I'd be glad to send you one because I want to know if it works! Just send me a PM. I'd like to get perhaps five people to test this out

Forgot to say the Tranquileyes. I have reoccurring corneal abrasion and these have been the only thing that has helped me with this.

Thanks for all the comments.

But can anyone explain more about the "pressure" sensation felt that goes around the eye? And why this is happening? And why sometimes it happens and sometimes not. Is there any danger that i can pop some vein in side my eye.

Based on my personal experience, I feel this when the pressure is on the high side.

Here are a couple of topics that mention that kind of thing happening:

An eyemask would be good for preventing air from blowing from the outside (from mask leaks) against the eyes, but I doubt an eyemask would stop what this topic is about... cpap air entering from within the eye area...from the inside out, so to speak. Maybe the slight pressure of an eyemask on the eyelid would get rid of the sensation you feel. Maybe.

I'd like to try it - my eyes are irritated since I got a Nasal mask. the top of the mask is uncomfortably close to my eyes.

Would appreciate trying it. Jan

This is why it happens:

You can see how the nose and eyes are connected.

This is an ongoing struggle for me. I can feel the air go straight up that duct and onto my eye just as soon as I turn the machine on. I have punctal plugs in my lower lids. I tried them in both lower and upper and it was a great relief at night but my eyes watered so much during the day that I had to have the upper ones removed. So I'm constantly fighting dry eye. Using the humidifier helps, but often causes my sinuses to swell up, so it's a battle. I keep a humidifier running in my room too, which helps a bit. Eye ointments and inserts really did no good at all for me.

South Africa Steps Up Efforts Against AIDS

SOVANE, South Africa — South Africa, trying to overcome years of denial and delay in confronting its monumental AIDS crisis, is now in the midst of a feverish buildup of testing, treatment and prevention that United Nations officials say is the largest and fastest expansion of AIDS services ever attempted by any nation.

I have this same problem and it started recently this year. I get trapped air around and behind my eyeball of my right eye. sometimes the air is released if i close my eye putting pressure on it but many other times it is just stuck in there. I have also experienced a small amount of loss in eyesight on this same eye and have no idea if its related. It is not painful, but the idea of having air trapped in my eye is not nice and uncomfortable.
have no idea how to fix this but only happens ones in a while. I am thinking that maybe one eye is bigger than the other and that the air is taking up on my right eye's empty space?...

It is possible to have PAP delivered through an oral appliance.

Yes there is at least one oral mask that I'm aware of.

The vision problems could be from blepharitis. I developed that after the machine had been drying my eyes out for a while. You can improve the problem by putting hot wash cloth over your eyes for about 10 or 15 mins then wash your eye lash area. I use fragrance free neutrogena soap because it doesn't burn or further dry out my eyes. Rinse well. I also use a little mascara brush one a week or every other week to comb out the junk from my eye lashes. Seems to work really well. I've also got punctal plugs in the lower lids. I've also used lacrimal inserts with some success, but you have to take them out in the morning or your vision will be blurred all day.
