anyone ever try hypnosis?

Post by vaderboi » Wed Apr 01, 2009 10:52 am

Anyone ever try hypnosis for anything? Sleeping better, anxiety, quit smoking, losing weight, etc.

Just wondering about people's experiences.

Before I got diagnosed with sleep apnea, I went to a highly recommended hypnotist who had a money back guarantee. I told her that I had trouble getting to sleep (1-2 hours) and when I did get to sleep, I kept waking up throughout the night. I went to three sessions and she sent me home with CD's to listen to every night. It didn't work and she refunded my money without me even having to ask for it.

I wish the sleep doctor had a similar guarantee.

Tried it to quit smoking once, and it worked pretty well for 3 weeks. Had no desire at all to smoke, the "suggestions" had it covered from home to out with friends to work.....then went out of town....and apparently the suggestions didn't cover away from home territory. Got off that plan and was smoking within minutes of leaving the airport.

I used it to quit smoking. Now here's the weird thing. They say it only works if you really want to change your behavior. Well, I didn't! I was pregnant so knew I had to quit, but deep down inside didn't want to and in fact was looking forward to lighting up that first cigarette after I had the baby.

My husband had been bugging me badly to quit, although he himself was smoking like a chimney. That didn't help. I had managed to cut back to one cigarette per day. I would light it, take a puff, then put it right out.

I had the hypnosis, didn't feel any different at all. Went home and lit a cigarette, this time smoking the entire thing. Had one more throughout the day, one puff at a time.

Then I woke up the next morning and ate breakfast. That had never happened before. Normally the first thing I would do would be to light one up.

I have not smoked since.

Have I been tempted? Yes! Many times. Pretty much every time I see cigarettes in the store, my eyes scan them for my favorite brand. I want to tell the clerk to sell me a pack or a carton. But I never ask. I smoked for 27 years and can't tell you how many failed attempts I made at quitting. No way will I ever start again.

Not theraputically.

I've done self-hypnosis on occasion, and I dabbled with hypnotizing others in college with some success many years ago. There are easier ways to get laid... lol (--That's a JOKE, people! It doesn't even work that way!--)

I can't imagine it would have any effect on OSA, tho. If anything, I'd think relaxation techniques would make things worse, not better. MAYBE it could work for Centrals, but I've not heard of that.

The OSA patient died quietly in his sleep.
Unlike his passengers who died screaming as the car went over the cliff...

That's a great story. Very ironic, and very surprising. You clearly got treated by a talented person.

I tried it once for weight loss in the early 80's. Worked for about 3 weeks. Funny thing is if I weighed now what I weighed then, I'd strut!

Hypnosis could be useful for OA's, If it would relieve the pain of installing a garden hose through your nose an into your lungs to hold your airway open. Jim

July 29, 1991 I went to a hotel where they were holding a hypnosis session to quit smoking/lose weight. I stayed for both sessions. I remember being aware of things going around me during the hypnosis. I thought, this is not going to work...... I have not smoked since but the weight is another story!

Hi,

I had a very similar experience to OutaSync - except I didn't get a refund. Didn't ask, didn't get. Went to the hypnotherapist thinking all I had was insomnia. Then tried acupuncture, a naturapath and a Buddhist meditation workshop. All to no avail. Last resort, mentioned it to my doctor who suggested, correctly, that I might have sleep apnea.

Tried cpap for two months and felt worse each and every day. Now I'm six weeks into using a mandibular device. At this stage feeling no worse, no better but will persevere. But I STILL have insomnia and can lie awake for a considerable amount of time each night, and wake often through the night. I'm not joking when I say I'd kill for a good night's sleep and to feel good the next day!
