What Keeps People on Cpap Up in the Middle of the Night?

Post by Janjr » Thu Mar 26, 2009 3:31 pm

Since I started on Cpap in the middle of January, I sleep better, longer and more rested than I used to. I have read other posts where people say they are also getting more sleep. But, I couldn't stay asleep last night, and after a while decided to see what was happening on Cpaptalk.com. People were posting, replies were being made, it was a busy, happening place.

So what keeps you awake during the night time hours?

Cannot speak for everyone but 0230 / 0300 is my morning. I usually get on around 0400 to 0500 when I can.

Last night I woke up in the middle of the night to use the restroom around 4:00 am and get a drink of water. I went to take the mask off to get a drink and the strap fell apart causing me to have to turn on the light to be able to see what I was doing to get the mask back together. The bright light pretty much woke me up for the rest of the night. I think I'm going to get a straw to use to drink water with when I have my mask on so I don't have to mess with the mask anymore. Learning as I go 5 Weeks in to this Journey with my CPAP.

Lots of the members and posters are scattered out across the world. Some probably work different shifts, others have insomnia or get up with a problem they're trying to figure out.....and then there are others that are just plain "night owls".
I'm NOT one of those anymore.

Heck, just turn up the humidifier. Problem solved.

One simple word... "stress"

I'm an accountant and i start thinking about my day or what i haven't done and need to do and on and on and on. There goes my sleep for 2-3hrs but I can fall back asleep and still feel rested. Touch wood.

I haven't been "staying up" in the middle of the night, but I do wake up 3-5 times per night.

Either I have very low humidity and I wake up coughing from a dry throat. Or if I have some humidity, I drool in my full face mask, the cushion seal gets slippery, and starts to leak air... waking me up.

And sometimes it's the shriek from the rotation of the mask's elbow joint, when I move. Sounds like a screech owl!

Became a night owl, from working 3rds, my clock got stuck, and won't reset. Now I set up to download video all night 11 PM to 3 AM, is when I do that, then hose on and let the computers work alone. Jim

I am a night-owl by nature. Since I began cpap I have tried to change, I realized that with the night awakenings, I was going to be as sleep deprived, as a mother with a new baby. After a few weeks of being awakened by a shreiking noise that either startled me awake, or if I was dead tired, blared on until my dh would nudge me. I changed my bedtime to 'bout 11:00. I stuck to that schedule for a couple of months, then my night owl nature came to the surface.

I came from a politically involved family, & my interest has increased with the new presidency and the changes that may be made. If I have a momentary awakening now, the lure to turn on the T.V. on MSNBC or Fox, turn the volume down as low as possible (not wake dh) and listen for a while to each station is too strong for me to ignore. I have to be careful not to laugh out loud when I watch Morning Joe with Joe Scarbrough. The variety of guests is interesting and their different points of view and some of the arguments can be amusing. He frequently shows reruns of Senate/House Hearings and the hypocrisy of most of our representatives doesn't amuse--it is an ongoing irritation.

Morning comes pretty early, and I am back to losing sleep - this time by my fasination with the political process.

I work rotating shifts, so sometimes I'm at work in the wee hours of the night.

alexcue, when I'm stressed out like that I use Rescue Remedy in a small spray bottle. Don't even have to remove my mask. Keeps the mind from racing all night long...

I've been an insomniac for years. Since being diagnosed with OSA, my insomnia has virtually disappeared.

However, earlier tonight (it's 3 a.m. for me) I graded for my purple belt in Tae Kwon Do, and I'm keyed up and also quite sore, so I'm awake!

some are up in the middle of the night because they are stressed, some work, several are night owls, others have problems with their equipment, but Money Girl is the most interesting. It was 3AM, she has insomnia, but, she won a purple belt in Taw Kwon Do, and she had sore muscles. Anyone else do anything unusual?
