Chinstrap in my Avatar (RipVW100)

Post by tattooyu » Sat Mar 21, 2009 10:02 am

I've been getting quite a bit of private messages regarding the chinstrap that is in my avatar photo.

It is called a RipVW100 and is made by user RipVW (Ted) on this board. It attaches directly to the headgear of the mask, is comfortable and well made. I thought this post might be able to drum up some business for Ted (I'm not in cahoots with him or anything).

Because of the shape of my face and not having much of a chin, it didn't end up working out for me. However, I would recommend it for anyone with an average to larger chin.

Good luck everyone!

I think it's important to repeat that a chin strap will not prevent lip fluttering or mouth breathing....both of which obliterate your cpap therapy because the blown air is all going out into the room instead of where it needs to go. To demonstrate, hold your nose closed, clench your teeth and blow air.

I have wondered about this particular chin strap also being counterproductive, since from its appearance, if your jaw did drop some, it seems that it would tug the strap downward and dislodge your LT nasal pillows. Double whammy. Maybe its creator can comment about that. RipVW??

Okay, since you’ve “summoned me” plr66, I'll comment—reluctantly, though, since I've never talked about my chinstrap on the forum. I never promote it here, just provide a link in my signature for those who want to take a look. I think you're right that the only way to seal one's mouth is probably to tape it shut. Many of us, though, just don't want to do that. As you have noted, no chinstrap seals the lips. For me, and I suppose for those who use any chinstrap, it simply keeps our mouth from relaxing and dropping open during sleep. I’ve been successful in training my tongue to stay on the roof of my mouth (if my mouth isn't open), so I don’t have the air pressure trying to escape, causing the flutters you describe. I learned about training my tongue on this forum. But, I suppose some folks cannot do the tongue training thing. Regarding the jaw thrusting open and dislodging one’s nasal pillow, I’ve not heard from anyone that they’ve had this issue, but it certainly sounds possible. Like all of this CPAP stuff we use—machines, masks, tape, humidifiers, chinstraps—what works well for some of us doesn’t work at all for others. Just the nature of the “CPAP beast,” I suppose.

I really respect that, RVW, and had no intention of making you a target. Just questions I've mused about. I think it's wonderful that we have so many creative and enterprising members here who have invented all manner of contraptions which can help any number of us. Thanks.

A sure way to prevent lip flutter is the old fashion needle and thread ...

Can you say ouch!

A user pointed out that I should note that my avatar now shows the PapCAP, which is the chin strap that ended up working for me.

If you want to see the original one that this thread is about, it is right here:

Total agreement, the strap looks all wrong to me as far as placement on pretty much any mask. Not saying it won't work but common sense says the weakest point of the jaw is directly under the tip of the jaw. Notice how they always put the tape around the small end of the alligators mouth when they catch them. If you put up closer to the where the upper and lower jaw connect it would just increase his speed when he snaps open for a nibble.

Kenny,

Three photos yet. . . well, that makes up for the delay!

Looks good and snug . . . hope you get the long-term results you are looking for. Men probably don't care about squashed hair

Thanks for the photo - good to see it at all angles (and an opportunity to see your fun personality coming through .

Joy

BHB: Funny thing is the PapCAP also goes under the fleshy part of the chin, but I guess since it's tied to the cap, it keeps things more stable. That's what it feels like to me, although I have a very small chin, so go figure.

Joy: I knew you'd like that! My hair does get pretty flat, but summer is coming and so is the #4 clippers!

Well then, you won't like this.

I just voted in the poll today.

I guess it was that vote yesteday that brought the subject back to the front page.
