Well, if I continue to hang out on here...I'll probably be thinking of it every day, even if using it at night becomes routine....

Though the way things are going...it could be many years before it becomes routine....

Well, I don't obsess with it anymore, but live just throws up road signs that bring it to thought. And of course, every time I log in here, it's on my mind. And I just watched part of a t.v. show (don't know the name of it) in which a woman who has weird dreams is married to a man who has sleeping problems. I kept waiting for him to be diagnosed with SA, but that never came up. His problem was due to his wife's crazy dreams. It was a little disappointing.

If they had sent that guy to a sleep lab, assuming his wife had stayed home, the sleep lab would have said he sleeps fine. This is another argument for portable home diagnosis devices.

I think about it when I climb in it at night and wash it in the morning, otherwise its a non issue. Although, like smoking nazi's, I can picture CPAP nazis who judge everyone they look at, and cant wait to tell them about their condition and how they should go to a doctor

Just a crazy thought:(not my idea)
For years, people suffered silently with sleep apnea, because there was really no way to treat it other than having the patient avoid sleep altogether, and many people found that solution to be mildly problematic. But then, as if by the very grace of God (which would be in total contrast to his earlier decision to blight the poor sleep apneaics with the disorder in the first place), a solution was found and the CPAP machine was invented.

A CPAP machine is an air compressor connected to a volley of tubes which in turn connect to a mask which in turn is velcroed to the face of some poor mongrel with obstructive sleep apnea (or to just anyone who was in the wrong place at the wrong time while said velcroing was taking place). The purpose of the CPAP machine, as it was explained, was to humiliate sufferers of obstructive sleep apnea and ensure that they never get laid again for the rest of their natural lives.

Ya, I was disappointed that Medium didn't go that direction....

Especially since they showed he still had problems when they were sleeping apart, and the 2nd doctor's solution is to tell him that is what napping during the day is for....

Like that's a realistic solution for the rest of us.

The more normal and back to life I become the more routine
the thoughts about all CPAP entails becomes. I have deliberately
made everything as simple and maintenance free as possible
to alliviate the feeling of being consumed by this new phase of my life.
Each new piece of knowledge from this forum I took and applied that worked
moved me one step closer to normal made it that much easier to think about
something more interesting than feeling I am going to be hooked to this thing for life.
AND I don't like it.

WELL life is much better now So I can take it.

May it become so for you.

I was diagnosed OSA starting CPAP in Dec 2008 so about 3 months into therapy. I feel like I think about my situation, equipment, cost, Insurance, etc. all the time too. I started out feeling like I would be like an invalid having to wear the mask , hose etc at night. After 3 months I do feel so much better, much more energy, and my nights are pretty good. I have not missed a night yet with about 6to 8 hrs usage each night. Although I have not yet been able to wear it in the daytime if I get up early then need an afternoon nap.
My setting is 9.0 and I have been using my C flex at 1 recently. I have found that I have fewer AHI with the setting at 1, at first they set it for me at 3. I no longer use the ramp feature.
My condition is severe at 38.5 with oxygen down to 73%. With 163 episodes during my sleep study, I am just now getting familiar with all the terminology, not certain if I have said everything right.
I also started with a humidifier setting of 4 due to very dry air this winter but now either set on 2 or 3.
I do think I am having a very positive experience considering how uneasy I was to be diagnosed with OSA. My family history on my Dad's side has many deaths from stroke and heart attack with my Dad dying at age 61 of massive heart attack. With all the information I have now and remembering his snoring patterns I do think he had OSA.
I have already learned a lot from what I have read since joining today. Everyone's experiences are interesting to read. Thank YOU!!!

I have had my CPAP machine for a Month now and have been thinking about it quite a bit everyday. Aside from the Financal worries which should pass once I pay the Equipment and Sleep Study off , I mostly think of being strapped to the Machine the rest of my life. Will this effect any future relationships? Will this help slow my Pre existing Medical problems from advancing? The CPAP machine has made me feel more alert and less tired but exhaustion still haunts me. I think the side effects of the medications I take make it hard for me to experience the full effectiveness of the CPAP machine. I use my Machine every night hoping this is the right direction for my health. I am new to this Forum and plan on reading it on a regular basis for advice , inspiration and encouragement.

Welcome.

A couple of comments:

-You won't be strapped to the machine for the rest of your life. Just while you are asleep and you can't notice it while you are asleep.

-Will this affect future relationships? Yes. You will not be so fatigued and irritable and will develop better relationships.

-As you gradually recover from the damage OSA has done to you, some of the medications may no longer be necessary.

You have the correct attitude to make it a success and I hope to hear more from you.

Good luck,

Started on CPAP is Oct 2006, switched to a bi-level in Mar 2008. I think of it first thing in the morning when I get up & check my data on the LCD screen, weigh myself and write down the number of steps on pedometer from the day before. Sometime before noon most days I will think of it again long enough to download data to my data card.

I'm retired so I spend a lot of time thru out the day checking in on the forum and during one of my 'puter visits I'll do the download from data card to software and include the weight and steps in the Notes section of the software.

Then I think of it again when I don my mask and realize I've forgotten to top off my humidifier tank at bedtime. If I'm having a problem, of course, I think of it more often and bring up my problem on the forum. But most of the time on the forum I'm not thinking about "my" xPAP and "my" therapy, just enjoying what I can learn and what I can offer or share.

I got my CPAP equipment 1-16-09. For the first few days, I couldn't believe I was in such a dreary situation, and I disliked the everything about it, especially my masks. I used nasal pillow masks for the first seven weeks. None of the three masks fit me, they hurt my nose, I couldn't keep them on my head (even with the tights), on and on.

I was so fortunate to find Cpaptalk.com the same time I picked-up my equipment. I found help and compassionate people who were so interesting, I could divert my frustration by bringing up the forum. So Cpaptalk.com balanced my distress and saved me from obsessing all day long.

I was recently fitted with a Mirage Micro nasal mask. It fits well, doesn't cause sore nares, it's more comfortable. I do think about it in the morning when I take it off, and again at night when I put it on--that's all.

It feel so good to get back to normal things . . . Like turning on my 'puter and finding out "Whats up" on Cpaptalk.com.
