My Reader won't read . . .

Post by JoyD. » Sat Mar 14, 2009 10:21 am

Thought I'd run this by the forum to get your ideas . . .

My VMWare Fusion is installed and running well (so I can use Windows based software on my Mac). I've installed Windows XP Pro which works fine with my Fusion. I've installed EncoreViewer which includes Mako DT3500 (Infineer Reader) drivers, dated 2004 & 2007.

Problem is, when I insert my Smart Card . . . it stays RED (no blinking red, no green) 98% of the time. (Note: On EV, It must be green in order for the Data Button to turn from gray to blue, so I can press it to access the report.)

I've rebooted, I've uninstalled then reinstalled Windows & Encore Viewer (& the readers via EV) . . . only a few times did I get "green" that allowed me to see my report . . . then if I went back later it wouldn't work again. BTW, I DID remove the reader from the USB port on the back of my iMac, and only plugged it in again AFTER I reinstalled EV.

Any ideas are welcomed! This is ^%$# frustrating! I want to take in a full report to my sleep doc on Wednesday.

Thanks, Joy

Hi Joy,

I'm sure that you are frustrated. I have had the same issue and boy was I frustrated. Mine is branded as "INFINEER" but is a Mako DT3500. Issue, for me seems related to leaving it always plugged into my computer and power surges?? Note that you only get a green light when the card is actively reading. Most of the time it is red on my unit.

Two things that I have found work for me to get the Mako working again.

1 (quick and easy). Unplug the Mako unit from the USB port and plug it into another USB port (this causes the windows driver to reset to the new port)

2 (more involved and time consuming)
2.1 Open "Control Panel" and then click on the "SYSTEM" Icon,
2.2 Click on "Device Manager",
2.3 Scroll through the list to "Smart card reader",
2.4 Click on it (or click the "+"),
2.5 Click on the "MAKO" driver to open the Driver window,
2.6 Click on "Driver",
2.7 Click on "Uninstall driver" (follow any additional directions).
2.8 Now unplug the Mako
2.9 Turn off the computer and then turn it back on
2.95 Plug the Mako back in, follow instructions and wait for the drivers to be located, down loaded and reinstalled. Should work now.

Good luck. Both of these have worked for me. It appears that the driver can get "Messed up" sometimes. I only plug mine in when I need to use it then unplug when I'm done and this has solved my issues.

Hope it helps.

I don't know anything about EncoreViewer, as I have Encore Pro. Are you getting an error message when you try to access the card through Encore? What message is it? I wouldn't pay much attention to the light on the card reader. It stays red on mine all the time unless I'm actually downloading datat off the card. Then it goes back to red right after.

Just in case,go to:

Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/Services and Applications/Services/Smart Card (Scroll Down the Services List)

Smart Card (Right Click) should be set to 'Automatic' in the Properties (General) and then 'Started'.

Thanks so much for your response! I've gotten rusty with Windows, but when I clicked on CP, then System . . . I tried the Hardware tab and found Device Manager, however nothing like "Smart Card Reader" was on the list.

So I tried this to uninstall & reinstall. First I removed both the EV software & drivers (by clicking on CP then "Add & Remove Programs"). I unplugged the Mako. Turned off both Windows & my iMac . . . then started them up again. I plugged the Mako back in the USB port -- reinstalled the Encore Viewer from the CD -- unzipped the EV file & installed the EV only (the drivers must have automatically reinstalled because I found them in the CP/A&R Pgms).

I clicked on EV, and inserted the card in the Reader . . . and it worked . . . a green light which allowed me to view my data! I wrote down what I did in case it happens again.

Anyway, thanks very much "builda" - hopefully, this will stick! (The short way didn't work for me).

And . . . Saces . . . I got into Administrative Tools to make sure I was set at Automatic as you suggested . . . I was. Thanks.

Joy
