FIRST NIGHT USING THE SWIFT

Post by neversleeps » Fri Aug 19, 2005 10:43 am

I ordered a Swift from cpap.com on Sunday night and got it yesterday. (Gotta love that!) I really like the Swift mask! My REMstar Auto stats showed the lowest snores ever recorded! AHI was 2.8! I'm so happy!!! Special thanks to Sleepless on LI and yawn for turning me on to this mask! (I think I may even order the Breeze now and give that a go.)

My only complaint is it is loud..... am about to do a search on this to see if there are fixes....

Anyway, YIPPEEEEEE!!!!!

Cool, NS!!

Not that you need any links, you "searcher", you!

But for other people, this might help:

Use a 1 inch sqaure piece, maybe slightly bigger, of vegetable netting (not tulle as some recommend), but not of too big a opening. You can find this on bags of pistachio nuts, cherry tomatoes and clementines. Put inside the barrel of the Swift, and it will be nearly silent except when you inhale and that is true of any nasal pillow mask. I didn't find mine that noisier than the Breeze if at all. Just remember to wear the straps loose, yes really loose, like you can put 3 fingers alongside you head under the straps, if it feels like the pillows will fall out when the pressure is on, you can slightly tighten the top strap but this will put more pressure on the nostrils, too. The barrel should not rest on your upper lip, that's what those side thingees are stiff for is to hold it out. Some have had leaking problems at the end plug opposite the hose, and have put some tape around the part that plugs in. When I've had this problem I just take it apart and put it back together until it quits. And it quits pretty quick. My Swift is 8 months old and just now starting to do this, however. You can feel a slight breeze of air coming out around the plug with your finger.

Your bed partner, if any, will like your Swift more than a Breeze. The Breeze vents a steady stream of air directly ahead of you toward your partner. The Swift vents at a slightly downward angle, maybe 20-30 degrees from the vertical. and is more dispersed. I had to switch to the Swift, not only because I hated the Breeze anyway, but because my husband couldn't stand that Breeze venting in his face.

I love my swift, I have fans to block background noise though. Which part do y'all find noisy. I do turn off fans and listen to it once in awhile. Is it just the exhaust port noise?

Not wanting to brag here, but I have THREE bed partners. (Actually 1 or 2 or 3, depending on the night and how hot I am....) The Lowchen sleeps at the foot of my bed and is not interested in masks. The Maltese moves around a lot and is afraid of masks. The Yorkie sleeps by my head and wants to kill all masks. So the airstream is currently not an issue. (And now we know why....)

I will try the netting fix, thanks Janelle!

Not to worry, r.g. I like being provided with links ALMOST as much as I like search!

seagull, yes, it is the exhaust noise. I can always resort to earplugs if need be.... definitely not so noisy that I would give up the Swift!

Hi, ozij! You know, I haven't tried it yet. I've been using my REMstar auto ever since that night. My original theory was to give it time to dry out. Now I'm putting it off because I'm just plain afraid to find out it might be forever ruined...

Maybe tonight I'll take the plunge.....

Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so glad you like it!!!!!!!!!1
I'm surprised that it's so noisy for you though. Mine is only noisy when there's a leak. Are you sure the sides are pushed into the barrel all the way? Try adjusting the angle of the nasal piece...sometimes I get loud noises and when I adjust the angle, it goes away. You might also want to try a larger size (what size are you using) nasal piece. I think you'll just have to fiddle around with it until it does what you want it too. I am so happy for you!!!!
Have a great sleep!!!! Amy

Janelle, I don't wear the straps loose at all...I get leaks if I try to. Also, I didn't realize the barrel shouldn't rest on my upper lip. How do you know all this??? I'm wondering what I missed on this.
Thanks! Amy

Actually, if you looked at the CD that came with the mask it would tell you a lot of this. If it leaks when you wear the straps loose, you definitely need larger nasal pillows. Try the next larger size. Most women wear even up to a Large. I wore a Medium for months, but I think I wore it out and have switched to the large and that is helping until I get a new mask.
