Work put me on call last week

Post by Busa » Mon Mar 02, 2009 2:26 pm

So last week was my first week of being on call since I have been on CPAP. I feel like I am dying. I forgot how bad I used to feel, and this is one heck of a way to remind me. Every night since last monday I have been woke up 2 or more times by people asking me to fix their problems. The worst part is that I was still expected to be at work on time. Now I am sitting at my desk, trying to forget about the pounding headache, the tiredness, and the total lack of energy. Man I do not miss this feeling at all. Tonight will be a great night. No on call and nothing but me and the CPAP. I can't wait.

Ok sorry, Rant OFF

You are on call to answer what? A help line? At night? How much help can you be awakened by the phone in the middle of the night? I can't imagine being on call except for a health care person and they are AT work, right?

I agree, being on call all night sucks!

Elader - there's a whole world of on call . A portion of my work is to arrange flights for organ transplants - frequently during the night. Hose on - hose off !! Then be at the office all smiley and happy!

For a long while, it was every night 7 days a week, now it's only ocassionally - but, I remember............

I work on tellecom stuff. So basically when you call in because your voice, video or data isn't up to what you think it should be, that call center that you called, calls their tech. If they can't figure it out, they call their 2nd tier support. Only when they can't figure it out do I get called. Which translates to most of the problems aren't that easy when you are awake. Nevermind when you just got woke up. It sucks, but at least I have a job in this market. Can't complain about that

My son works for a company that specializes in tires and repair. He is often on call since they change diesel tires on the big rigs, farm machinery, practically anything if it has tires he probably has worked on it. His work has sent him to school in the past and last I knew he was the only in his company that could change some of the really, really big tires on some of the specialized equipment. He wears a pager and cell phone and yep, he has had to get up and go out in the night on many occasions and then is expected to show up for work with a smile on his face.

My brother works in heating and air -- yep he is on call as well. When the heat goes off people do not want to wait till morning to get it fixed (at least in Missouri they don't). He still works the next day as well.

Yep, it stinks I don't know how they do it to be honest.

In defense of Busa, I used to be a frickin' SECRETARY at a high-tech company who shall remain nameless.

I was REQUIRED to carry a pager 24/7 and to respond to it, even when on VACATION. I really liked that I was out on a primitive encampment, with no cell phone, no electricity, closest to ANYTHING was a 1 hour paddle across the lake - and they still made me carry it.

If the frickin' shipping department had a question, they could call me at 3 am and ask me.

Needless to say.... I DON'T FLIPPIN' WORK THERE ANYMORE!!!!

Hugs to you, Brusa!

I'm on a on call rotation... comes with the job (I'm in IT). I get a week currently about every 5 months.

One good thing that I do have to say for this treatment... I can fall back asleep and sounder asleep than what I used to when I was oncall.

Wow, you are lucky....I'm on a on call rotation....also in IT. I'm on call for a week every 5 weeks.

I was freaking out, worried about getting called during my first on call week since starting CPAP....but I didn't get called.

Last week (my second week on call since starting CPAP) I was on call. Nothing happened at night during the week. And, I swapped last weekend for next weekend (because that guy is going out of town)....there was a call during the weekend, so I lucked out. Though I did have to work a bit here and there. The Friday night work was pretty simple....run a script that I had written to start the ball rolling, and then monitor IM and emails in case there are any glitches. And, then I knew there would be a break to go off to sleep. And, then take care of the final bits in the morning. Then I had to go in late Saturday night to install more memory in the enterprise calendar server. Turned out to be more work than I expected (should've been a two man job)...but I got it done. Then home to sleep.

OTOH, two weeks ago there was a major melt down...and it was all hands on deck (at least it was for those of us that take our jobs seriously, even if the state doesn't think they need to pay us to solve its fiscal crisis). I stayed up past 4am fixing things. It took a few nights to recover from that loss of sleep.

Still I wonder what'll happen (now) when the phone does ring while I'm sleeping....

The Dreamer.

Being a firemen sometimes we get to sleep on the job since we are there for 24 hours. Most people would rather we do nothing all day which would be fine with me because no one would be hurt and no ones property would be in peril. I work a 24 hour on duty and 48 hour off duty. It has become very rare that we go without a call in the middle of the night that I get up for, but that's what I am paid for. Don't get me wrong, I love my job and I am not complaining but I am feeling improvement by using my cpap and the days after work when I don't get much sleep reminds me to make sure and not slip my mask off in my sleep or forget to put it on.

Sometimes a reminder like that is better than a partner that is supposed to say something.

I have been in IT for a number of years now, in various capacities...when in the Nav, I'd get the 2am call that the server won't come back up after the midnight reboot (I HATED Xenix)....that entailed a 38 mile drive to the base...

Now I work for a company that creates software for a specific market, and we sell worldwide. If one of our Australian or Singapore customers call for support in the middle of their day, it is the middle of our night...someone has to take the call. Due to some office politics where one individual has used the backs of others to climb the ladder, I taken off the on call backup list for over a year now and have not complained a bit...<grin>...I'm not quite sure what she thought she gained by taking me off the list (other than thinking I would be upset about losing the $50.00 comp for the midnight call), but in reality she did me a HUGE favor, I hated those calls....<even bigger grin>....

I recently switched from day shift to second shift then went out of town and worked day shift and now I have been switched to overnight shift until they decide to switch me again. This is my first all nighter and I already dread trying to sleep in the morning. I was also on call when I was on day and second shift. I couldn't sleep all day today. You should try to sleep with 4 or 5 kids running around when they are out of school or on weekends.

I have a 4 bedroom house but need 7 bedrooms. A bedroom for each kid and my wife and then one in a corner in a dark basement for me.

I am going to buy either some window coverings to darken the room or put something over the windows (which will irritate my wife since she hates feeling like she is in a cave) but I need my sleep.

For now I still have a job but it doesn't look very good and due to making the stupid decision to change jobs two years ago I am 2nd from the bottom in seniority and was second from the top.

I should have checked the stock market when I changed jobs for a few dollars more an hour. My old company is around $20 now and my current company is under $3.

Live and learn !

Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm on call too, 24/7 for over 7 months now. Only thing is that I haven't been called! It sucks looking for a job in this economy and not getting "the" call.

Kopoloff was on call 24/7 for 7 years straight in his previous life. Worst night he ever had was 3 callouts in one night, first as he was sitting down to dinner, second as he tried for dinner again at 11.00pm after returning from the first call, then the third at 2.30 am just as he got into bed after returning from the second call. Got home at last at 7.00am, just in time to go to the office and chair a meeting.

The worst part of all of that was that it was the same STUPID STUPID STUPID customer.
