On or Off when getting up to use bathroom?
On or Off when getting up to use bathroom?
Hello, I could not find an answer so here goes. Do you leave the machine on or turn it off when getting up to use the bathroom? Also if you turn it off will it reset the timer? Under my Ins. I have to use it for at least 4 hours a night. I get that without trouble but if I turn it off I'm thinking it will not add to the total for the night when I turn it back on. If I just leave it on I would think my leakage would be very high. Thanks for the help.

I used to leave it on, but I figured blowing into nothing wasn't a good idea, so now I turn it off.
I've wondered about the numbers myself. Don't know the answer to that one.

I turn it off. It doesn't matter how many times you turn the machine on and off, it totals all the hours for a 24 hour period.

My initial answer, before the page loaded, was going to be: Off. My hose doesn't reach that far.
I definitely turn it off. Otherwise, with it blowing and me not being there I would expect to see something like this on my machine:
Leakage: ∞ L/s

The respironics will not even start a new sleep cycle unless you have it turned off for 60 minutes. Just hit the off button, remove the hose from the mask, go, attach hose to mask and turn machine back on. Don't even have to dislodge your mask!N6CRV wrote:Hello, I could not find an answer so here goes. Do you leave the machine on or turn it off when getting up to use the bathroom? Thanks for the answers! I now will be turning it off. It will also keep my wife happy as it does make alot of noise if I'm not hooked into it.

Agreed. Resmed M series definitely adds it up.Bluebonnet_Gal wrote:I turn it off. It doesn't matter how many times you turn the machine on and off, it totals all the hours for a 24 hour period.
Techs told me to block the hose when they were demobnstrating the machine without it attached to the mask, as it's not good to run the machine without any back-pressure.

If I was getting up during the night I would be removing the mask and turning the machine off, but...
Before therapy I was getting up 2 - 3 times during the night to use the washroom... thought I had a prostate issue.
After therapy I sleep right through the night.
So, if you are just starting therapy getting up during the night may soon be a thing of the past.

Ditto for my husband. We both thought he had prostate issues and now he sleeps through the night, every night. Almost worth wearing the mask for that reason alone.
Re: On or Off when getting up to use bathroom?
Yes it has really cut down on having to get up at nite. Not sure if I'm lucky but I not been having the GERD trouble now that i'm on Cpap. It is like the pressure keeps the acid down where it belongs.

Don.....
Why are you using your machine just a little more than 4-hours a night? Why aren't you using your system for the whole night?
Your urge to get up for a bathroom break is caused by high BP......and your sleep apnea is causing the high BP.
Connect the dots......use your CPAP machine for the whole night.....and you'll stop having to get up.
If you doubt that the above is correct, take your BP as you get up to go pee.....I'm betting you'll be shocked by what you find out.

Well..... yeah!!!!! It's like a vacuum motor running amok if there's nothing (your face) to hold back the pressure.....N6CRV wrote:It will also keep my wife happy as it does make alot of noise if I'm not hooked into it.

Always turn it off when not in use!!! I've gotten to where I even just take off the mask as I've gotten practiced enough to get it back on in the dark by the braille method - no problem. By the time I get it hooked up, the auto on starts it for me....
Take care

edit to add: I usually get up once a night myself -- I used to get up 5-6 times a night!!!!! If you're getting up more than once in a night, you might want to check out the numbers!!!
