Spammers

Post by deerhound » Sun Feb 08, 2009 3:17 pm

Anyone notice the drastic increase of SPAM around here? I must have deleted at least 15 or 20 in the last couple of days.

Is it asking too much to have people register as a member in order to post?

In fact, I propose two mandatory changes to the bulletin board (yeah, I'm a noob and I'm taking over!!! )

#1 - Gotta register to post to cut down on the fly by spamming and other fishing expeditions

#2 - No more pictograms for equipment lists. Yeah, that's right. I went there...

On #1... trying posting without logging in and see what happens.

I had an e-mail exchange with Johnny about this situation last week. I'm posting his response below.

Den

Howdy,

We found that one spammer was posting 1-2 guest posts per hour by hand.
We've put additional limits on multiple guest posts from a single source
over a set time. They are in place at the time of loading in the form to
type, so legit guests won't waste their time typing stuff in only to
find it failed.

Also, we make it clear that if they register, they can post we much as
they please. Here's the error message:

You have tripped our spam prevention system and will not be able to post
as a guest again today. If you are a human needing CPAP help, and not a
spammer or bot, please <sign-in> or <register> a free account and then
you can post as much as you'd like. If you don't want to register, but
still want help, please try again in <23> hours and <34> minutes.

Please let me know if this cuts down on spam, I think it will.

Johnny

That approach seems like a good one.
Spammers are in my estimation, almost in the same category to people who start bushfires/wildfires.

I like that people who really need help don't have to register to start interacting with the board. I've noticed the spam and have deleted a few myself. But I don't see it as a big problem. Frankly, I love the software here that allows all registered users to immediately delete spam. It helps to keep the board relatively clean, and there are many people to police it. Many hands make light work, they say. It seems to be true.

I'll second that about easily being able to delete the offending posts. I was just wondering about the increase because I figured a lot of members are like me and immediately delete spam when they see it.

Those spamming guest would have given up, if the "guests can't put links in posts" limitation had been working properly.
I was very surprised to see links in those spam posts - maybe something broke along the way in one of the forum changes/corrections?

since the new forum was put online about 6 months ago, links have been allowed in guest posts - that restriction was not implemented in the new software

not all registered users can delete spam - some have lost their delete spam privilege by deleting legitimate posts
