can't detect card reader

Post by gasparama » Sun Feb 08, 2009 7:11 pm

This is come up before, but my search skills must be poor because I can't find the answer. Since I have no computer at home that will install EP, my son put it on his laptop with Windows XP and only SP1. Until tonight he's not brought is over here for about 2 months. When I tried to download the data, I got the message, Card Reader not Detected. This is Encore Pro 1.8 and was working fine the last time I used it. This computer is used for little other than to work remotely when my son is on call for his job. He keeps it pretty simple, but something has changed. Can someone tell me what to do? My sleep doc wants to check my data tomorrow. Thanks

ok, after a little research, I've found the service manager in the task bar, but under My Computer, the card reader does not show.

This is what you need to look for. To keep the Card Reader from disappearing I had to go to "run" under accessories and type in "services.msc" and then find the reader and switch it from manual to auto start. If you still can't find it reinstall the reader. Jim

To fix this, or at least what worked for me was to go to "run" under accessories. Type in "services.msc" Then find the reader and switch it from manual start to auto start. That fixed the missing reader for me for once and for all.

Give it a shot and see what happens,

You guys are incredible. And so is my son. I finally broke down and called him (as much as you guys know, you probably understand his frustration at being called all the time to solve everyone's problems). He had me go to services, then to smart card readers, then to stop on the properties window. That did it. I feel so fortunate to have a doctor who actually approves of my monitoring my own therapy that I was getting quite upset at not being able to take the info in to him. Woohoo! I'm in business now.

Thanks a million times over for all the patient support that you have given people over and over. You've both come to my rescue in the past.

YOU are awesome for searching and not expecting your very own tutoring session.

Gumby, I apologize to you and the others for posting my original question. There are no excuses, only reasons, for the bad things that we do. I did try the search feature and put in the exact words of the EP popup message that I got. However, because I was in a stressful situation, either I didn't type correctly, or I failed to see the answer that I sought. After reading your last post, I now realize that I acted as a pampered princess by asking for help and my "very own tutoring session."

I get that a lot with mine, it's really annoying. Oddly, I've found that if I simply plug it into a different USB port it works fine. YMMV.

I finally broke down and bought the software today. I've spent all evening trying to get it to work without success. I am still geting the "Smartcard reader not detected" error, despite trying every suggestion that I've seen on this forum. In addition to the suggestions above, I tried installing the software in the following order:

Installed encorepro 1.8.49
Installed smartcard reader drivers
restarted computer
connected the smartcard reader to the USB port (windows device manager recognized reader right away)

Still, when I go into encorepro and attempt to download data from the smartcard, I get the same old "not detected" error. I've tried different USB ports without success. This is Windows XP. Does anyone have another suggestion that I can try?

It is unbelieveable that this company will charge such an exorbitant amount for this software and yet won't lift a finger to address a problem that is widely experienced by its customers. I have a mind to contact the Better Business Bureau if you're listening Respironics!

Thanks in advance everyone for any ideas you may have.
