How Do I Enable My SmartStart?

Post by mdbarthe » Sat Feb 07, 2009 9:42 am

I just began using a Resmed S8 Autoset II with the new Humidaire 4i attachment. I used a loaner from my respiratory therapist that sold me on this brand of CPAP. I particularly liked the SmartStart/Stop feature of the machine. When I got my machine home, the SmartStart was not enabled. I checked out the user's manual (and even dowloaded the Clinical Manual) to see how to enable the feature. For some reason, when I get the Clinical Menu to display and I get the SmartStart submenu, it says "OFF" and there is no "change" feature in the window as there is with other features.

Is it possible that my RT disabled my ability to change the SmartStart feature? All of the manuals show that the feature is available on my machine. If the RT did disable the feature, why would he do that? Thanks for any assistance anyone can provide.

Absolutely not.
The reason you can't enable SmartStart is because you're using a ResMed Ultra Mirage Full Face mask. When that mask is selected, it automatically disables SmartStart.

Thanks, Den, but why does it do that? When the RT sent the loaner home with me for a home study, it was enabled and I was using the same mask.

I have no way of knowing all of the details of your situation, but if a different mask was selected in the menu, it would possibly still work.....otherwise, every ResMed machine I've read about will not be able to use SmartStart with the full face mask selected. I'm not a ResMed machine user (but I do use their masks), but from my reading on the forum and the manuals, I think it's the larger air capacity in the full face mask that would make it harder to auto start.......so they just disable the feature for the UMFF mask.

Don't misunderstand my remark about selecting a different mask. With the ResMed machines, the correct mask (as I understand it) needs to be selected so the machine can calculate the correct leak rates, etc. I was NOT advocating selecting a different mask in order to use the SmartStart feature.

That is absolutely brilliant of Resmed. Sarcasm should be assumed here.

I know with my M series the auto-start often doesn't work when the leak rate is high. The UMFF is one it has trouble with.
