Can't Get More than 4-5 Hours

Post by efpat » Thu Feb 05, 2009 5:42 am

I was diagnosed with apnea about 4 years ago. I started on CPAP using a Resmed machine and nose mask. Like many, that first night was a miracle. I slept about 7 hours and woke up rested for the first time in a decade. I kept using the maching for about 2-3 years. During that time I was not 100% compliant but I averaged at least 5 days a week. And my average amount of time sleeping with CPAP was about 5-6 hours. I stopped using it completely about a year ago. I started again about two months ago. I am using a new machine and the same brand of mask. My problem is that I rarely get 5 hours of sleep on the machine. Last night was particularly bad. Feel asleep on the machine around 10 pm. Woke up just before two am. Been up since. Four hours is not enough. On the days I go at least five hours I'm ok but I know I need more sleep. Any advice about how to get more sleep using the mask would be helpful. Thanks. EFPAT

Your experience sounds almost identical to mine. After being diagnosed 6 yr. ago and "trying to use" cpap for more than a year, I turned it back in and went for months without treatment. Last Aug. I was issued Resp. m-series for 5 weeks (it was supposed to have been for 2 wks.), and I held out for the Autoset II, which I've used since Sept. I had trouble keeping up my average daily usage up to 4 hrs. At Christmas, it was down to about 3.2 hours. I made a concerted effort to get it back up to 4.
Guess what? This morning it was 5.12 (average for the last month). Yes its true. One must "train" their brain to use cpap, and it takes months and months to do that. The Ultra Mirage has been the perfect mask for me, as I used the LT Swift for about six weeks, and it was very good, but just wasn't as good as the UM for keeping my AHI under 3.
So for me, I believe I've got the ideal set-up in equipment. The Autoset II and UM have kept my AHI at below 2.5 and average hrs over 5.
For me, that's almost a miracle. Also, thanks to all on this forum for the progress and help I've attained.
cheers,
Jay

CPAP is an inferior form of treatment and for all you "sheep" that say it works it's called the Placebo effect. CPAP is WAY over prescribed for every "happy" person there are 5 people who are suffering with this dumb machine. There are other options I suggest it is time to look into them.

There are many things in life like that. cpap is one of the least offensive.

That’s just not true. Look at this forum there are THOUSANDS of people with all kinds of issues with CPAP and the fact that this website even exists it proof that CPAP is not a CURE ALL. Plus the fact that CPAP is supposed to be for life but less than 30 percent of users can tolerate it daily for more then 3 years. Please don’t listen to these "unemployed" hypochondriac know it alls. Do some research there are other options

I have to respectfully disagree. This forum exists because of thousands of persons who give of their time and knowledge to be of help to us who are relatively new, and need it. I don't know where you've gotten the 30% figure from. Can you give us precise, substantiation, and documentation for that figure. Most studies say it is somewhere between 50 - 60. Look for yourself.
Jay.

For example, the Bio-Med Journal uses a 70% success rate: http://news.bio-medicine.org/medicine-n ... rs-3151-3/

Obviously, CPAP SUCKS thinks he has more info, intelligence, etc., than the thousands of sheep he is referring to. But, he/she hasn't got anything but his own opinion to base his thoughts on, or more info would have been provided.

This poster is just too ignorant to even warrant a conversation. Talk is cheap.

First of all - Cpap blows you jackass - get it right. If there were anything that worked better and was easier especially for SEVERE OSA don't you think we would be all over it! I wish I had that picture Snoredog posted a lot with the guy with his head up his arse...

Besides - look what it has done for my upper body...

efpat - Sorry, looks like someone used your post for their soapbox. Back to you being unable to get enough sleep... the link Rooster posted is a topic of interest to me. Just based on my experience I think there's something to the brain needing to be retrained to sleep. That would be, though, after ruling out other possible causes. Some meds disrupt sleep. Also, if there's any chance your pressure is not adequate, by that time of night if you were in REM, where OSA is often worse, it could be causing you to waken.

Best wishes in working thru this.

Kathy

What other options are there ??

My husband had the palate surgery, all it did was make it easier for him to snort food up his nose.

Nose strips don't do any good. The wife would also like some sleep and the machine does shut him up.
