SANDMAN INTRO CPAP MACHINE

SANDMAN INTRO CPAP MACHINE:

Hi! Has anyone else used this machine? I am new to sleep therapy,
just being diagnosed with Severe Sleep Apnea with a pressure of 9.0. I
have been fighting with masks for a week now. I asked for the Sandman
Auto, but was given the Intro by the DME (all about money, you know!), and
really wonder about the constant pressure, etc. Also, does anyone know how
to adjust the settings that the clinician usually has access to do?

Any help would be great. Please tell me any of your good or bad experiences with the new Sandman. I am not sure I like breathing against the inflowing air, as I do not think the Sandman slows down for exhalation?

I would get the Sandman "Auto" version NOT the intro CPAP unit.

The reason is that machine does NOT have any exhale relief like CFlex or Aflex. Even though your pressure is only 9.0 cm, if you develop aerophagia with that CPAP machine you are kinda screwed to relieve it and still obtain ideal therapy.

With the Auto, it has a CPAP "mode" just like the Intro CPAP, so it can run in the exact same mode as the Into machine. But if you have problem with aerophagia you can switch it to Auto mode then set a lower starting pressure like 6.5 which can make it easier on the aerophagia and falling asleep when you have a apnea during the night once asleep machine will move up from 6.5 to 9.0 cm automatically to take care of it, then it will settle back down.

The Auto is also a data capable machine, you can add software to it and generate reports to see how your therapy is going. That can reduce the amount of trips back and forth to the DME and doctor to see what is up with your sleep.

Both the DME and Doctor will attempt to talk you out of the Auto machine going so far as to lie about why you shouldn't have one. They are just protecting their profit margin and reoccurring revenue.

Make sure you get the script for the machine from your doctor along with a copy of the PSG report that came from the lab. You will need those items going forward, you have every legal right to them.

Here is the Auto version of that machine:

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Still So New at This

Post by CrazyPAP » Fri Aug 08, 2008 5:41 pm

Thank you Snoredog for your rapid reply, and for confirming what I have been saying to both my Respiratory Therapist assigned to me at the DME, and the Pulmonary Doc assigned to me at the sleep center, who wrote the script. That script also says that I can have Cflex if I want it, that seems to say to me that I could get the Auto Sandman if I want it? They usually write their scripts for the ResMed S8.

Anyway, what is the aerophagia, and can you explain that more, and the need for the Auto Sandman, so I can explain it to my Pulmonary Doc, so she can put pressure on the DME for the Sandman Auto, or should I go with the S8 with Cflex?

P.S. on the Sandman

Post by CrazyPAP » Fri Aug 08, 2008 5:45 pm

I am now concerned about not having pressure relief on the Sandman, compared to ResMeds.

Is it all it is meant to be? Who is the best at that, and quiet and small.

Those were the requirements I was looking for when I researched for the Sandman:

Most quiet
Smallest
Lightest

Some of us just HAVE to have pressure relief (me, for example). That's hard to predict, though, until you've tried it both ways, with/without. I think it is best to have all the options--APAP/CPAP, pressure relief/no pressure relief--available on one's CPAP machine. After you get a machine without the options, it's too late if you find out later that you needed/wanted them, unless you just get another machine.
