nasal irritation from pillow masks

Post by 7diverdog7 » Fri Jan 16, 2009 10:58 am

I have noticed the topic appearing on this forum and this is the solution that works for me. Before sleep apply a small amount of Bacitracin Ointment to a cotton tipped applicator. Coat the inside of the nostrils thoroughly and to any irritated surfaces. Gently inhale and if you feel ANY resistance, blow your nose and go to sleep.

Not!
Each gram of ointment contains 500 units of Bacitracin in a low melting special base containing White Petrolatum and Mineral Oil.
You are using an antibiotic when no antibiotic is called for. I am sure you are aware of over prescribing of antibiotics in this country. Do you think that the irritation is caused by a living organism that you need to kill with an antibiotic? I doubt it.

The petrolatum and mineral oil are probably the sole reason for the relief from irritation. However, petrolatum and mineral oil if aspirated into the lungs can cause lipoid pneumonia. Now I know you are only using small amounts but you may do it for years. Once aspirated into the lungs, these chemicals cannot be removed by the body and of course accumulate over the years.

Why take the chance when there are safer products available. Ayr gel is one that many members here use.

Lansinoh lanolin worked wonders for me. It worked even better then the special CPAP ointment I got from my DME.
