Are there any long term problems that will develop from awakening each morning with dry throat and dry mouth? The first couple of swallows are uncomfortable until more saliva is generated. What are the reasons you have found that cause the dryness??

Yes..............I have had a dry throat and dry mouth for the last couple of years and it eventually turned into a dry, scratchy throat and chronic laryngitis......I would have days when I could barely talk........But, it was my own fault because I used the cpap w/o a humidifier.....When I first got my machine in 1997 I was given a little rinky dink humidifer (not heated) and I used it for a couple of years and then I decided I could do without it. The people at my local oxygen supply place never did mention a heated humidifer and I never thought about it until I started reading posts here.....I ordered an H2 humidifer from cpap.com and am very pleased with it, but last night was the first night I used it.........I noticed right off that I wasn't coughing at night as much, but my voice still isn't right.....I guess I need to use it regularly for some time yet to even notice a change in my voice (since it took some time for my voice to become hoarse anyway).....I hope you are using a humidifer now and, if not, you should get one.......I'm also wondering if my humidifer use will eventually bring my voice back to normal so if there are any people out there who have any suggestions, please let me know..............I've read many posts here and have not come across anyone who has chronic laryngitis from the cpap machine........Good Luck with your problem............the cpap sure helps when it comes to getting a good night's rest, but it definitely causes many other problems.....

ginny....thats what i mean...how much worse could a dry throat etc. begin a stage of cancer if left to irritate over the years. I use a heated humidifier but i am going to tape my mouth closed for a few nights and see what happens.

I know what you mean.........I don't think I have cancer because some days my throat and voice seem fine, and then other days I can barely speak and it's very dry and scratchy......I also don't want to wake up and get a drink of water.....I only wake up when I absolutely have to (to go to the bathroom)......I have never taped my mouth shut because I'm thinking that I got used to my mouth being shut years ago when i started the cpap treatment.........Who knows.....Maybe I am opening my mouth......I should probably try a full face mask and I may do that........I'm just hoping this humidifer works for me...........

Ginny & Stanley....do either of you have allergies that could account for this?

I've never had any allergies in my 56 years..........unless I'm just getting them now.......!!!!!

I do know that several years ago when I was on the cpap I would get up sometimes in the morning with absolutely no voice at all........... I'd usually have hot coffee and my voice would come back.......I never had this until I started using the cpap.......

Now it seems to be getting worse................I'll have to see what happens after using the humidifier for a few weeks...............I'm just hoping it is all the dry air I've been inhaling for 8 years and that the warm, moist air will help........

Barnaby,

I've read that dry mouth (lack of enough saliva) can contribute to tooth decay and periodontal problems. Apparently saliva helps keep teeth and gums healthy?

Hey gang !!!

Last night I slept with a piece of tape over my lips. I woke up this morning at 8 AM and did NOT have a dry mouth or dry throat !!!
I called my tech at the DME and asked what kind of tape i should buy to use daily. She said don't do that...I will bring you a better strap for your chin.
She came over in one hour with a Tiara velcro head and chin strap ...I wil use it tonite ( Wed. Aug. 10th) and see how that holds the mouth closed and how I slept with it.
