SQL Server SP2 Update KB954606 12/9/2008

Post by GumbyCT » Wed Dec 31, 2008 4:30 pm

I have my Windows updates turned off (not on auto) as everyone should, so that changes (problems) don't happen then I have to figure out what happened and when. Like when people have troubles with their card readers. So while selecting which updates I wanted I saw one for SQL Server SP2 Update.

I did NOT dl or install this update and have no idea what it's for. You can check Microsoft for KB954606 12/9/2008 to see what this update is all about. I post it here just as fyi....

Gumby,

I posted a note about an update back in July.....

viewtopic/t37403/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=33 ... QL#p285069

I would think it should be OK to update.

I have had the SP2 on my computer for a while. Got it on a disk from Best Buy. Have not had any problems with the SQL database. I actually had SP3 for a while. I downloaded it after I installed Encore Pro and it worked fine although several folks I have talked with have had problems with getting Encore Pro to load properly with SP3. I had other problems with SP3 conflicts so I deleated SP3.

I've never had any problems with SP3.........because I've never installed it on any of my own computers.

I've just read about too many problems that others have had, to dare to "go there".

I work for a software company, the main program I deal with uses SQL Server. Apparently one of the programs on your system uses SQL Server. If you have it, you probably should do the update, SP2 has a couple of critical fixes.

The Encore Pro software uses a "version" of MS-SQL.......which is probably the one the update program sees as needing the update.

Found this...

Overview
A security issue has been identified in the SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 that could allow an attacker to compromise your system and gain control over it. You can help protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

Gumby,

The SQL Server that Encore Pro uses is this one: SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE)

If you have the version 1.8i CD, on it there is a directory (folder) named "files".
Within that one there's another one named "SQL 2005".
Within that one there are a combination of 6 files/programs

The Microsoft update program interrogates your system and decides what you have and what needs to be updated.
You've obviously got it installed in your system or it wouldn't have listed the update.
If it was ME......I'd go ahead and update it.

Your call......

Oh this was not my machine but another Vista Home laptop I was checking updates on.

Gumby is not one who needs to be the first on the block with patches of any sort.

In time, I'm sure it will get what it needs.
