High Frequency Noise on M Series Auto

Post by alexcue » Mon Dec 29, 2008 6:09 pm

I've been working with my new M Series Auto w/A-Flex for a week. It seems that just about every night i get this high frequency noise coming from the machine some time during the night. I've fiddled with the mask, the hose and even moved the unit around a bit trying to fix it. If i stop and then restart the CPAP the noise dissappears after the restart. I'm usually not that sensitive to noises tho I am a light sleeper. But this particular frequency is just annoying and is keeping me awake in the middle of the night.

If this continues i may have to switch machines/brands.

My settings are A-Flex on, APAP mode 8-15

I have the same machine and even use the same mask, and I can't even hear the thing run its so quiet. Maybe yours has a defect or an internal problem, because that is not normal. I've had and used mine now for a little over a month and love it and the Swift LT! If it continues to do that, I'd take it back to your DME.

I also have the same machine and I had the same noise problems. Sometimes, mine would be quiet and other times it would be very noisy as you described. I took my machine back to my DME and they sent it in and a replacement was sent back to me with about 7 - 10 days. The one sent to me was refurbished, but it seems to be as good as new and is much quieter.

Mine does that, kind of randomly. I woke up the other night to it making that noise, and fumbled around trying to turn it off and discovered my humidifier chamber had leaked all over the place.

Dried everything out, and it seems to be fine. Noise has either abated, or I just don't notice it anymore.

If you can't get the DME to take it back, you might try earplugs, until you can get over the hurdle of using it. I find the silicone style earplugs work very well for me.

Good luck!
B.

Aflex on what setting? I am wondering if the Aflex (or Cflex) setting causes the noise you hear; esp. on exhale? The higher pressure settings prob also increase the noise.

If DME can't or won't fix it ask for the whisper cap (a muffler) which can help some.

I have the same machine and it's annoyingly noisy, even with the whisper cap. Completely turning off C-Flex helps, but must be done through the clinician's menu. I didn't think I could handle going without C-Flex but it works out just fine. There is still a small whistle even without C-Flex, but much less than with it. The mask isn't the problem. I swapped machines with my hubby for two nights. He doesn't have the Auto, just the CPAP plus, and uses a different mask. The machine made just as much noise on his side of the bed.

I have a radio with white noise that I put on when it gets too unbearable.

I have the same machine and it DIDN'T make any noise at all for the first 3 weeks. NOW, I too, notice a very high pitched tone that definitely gets my attention. I turned the thing off and then back on again and the sound went away. If the sound came back, I was already asleep and did not hear it after that.

These are just machines made by MEN.....they have a tendency to get hosed up (no pun intended).

I know what you mean. I love my machine but every once in a while I end up hearing a wheeze or whistling sound that kind of bugs me. Just when I begin to worry it get quiet again. Not sure what causes that but I have had mine now for over a year with no real problems.

No noise problems with mine, although I have it installed in a night stand lined with acoustical foam, and I wear ear plugs. When my mother had a noise increase with hers, we were able to trace it to improperly seated/mated silicone gasket on the humidifier tank. That appears to be a place prone to noise/leaks if not seated properly.

I've been suspecting that it's something to do with my humidifier, possibly the entrance from the APAP into the humidifier. The gaskets in the humidifier gave me trouble with my leak rate, gradually increasing the rate until they became completely unseated. I'll have to check it again. Thanks for the reminder, Georgio.

i have the same mask and machine, a-flex at 3, just recently changed settings from 6-15 to 12-15. I now notice a small noise when I begin to exhale. I think its just from the pressure changes. Its just enough of a noise to annoy me some, but I try to focus on something else and I dont notice it.

Thanks for the confirmation. It's not every night that i hear it. My AFlex setting is 2 by the way.

Maybe I'm just hyper sensitive to the noise.

My first machine (same brand/model as yours) had this problem. It got progressively worse over the first month or so until I couldn't stand it any longer and took it back to the DME and told them there is something wrong with it. They acted like I was an idiot, but I insisted on another one. They gave me another one (same brand/model) which I've logged nearly 3,000 hours on at this point and it has not made that noise. The one that made the noise...it was a high pitched whining sound, absolutely horrible and yeah it kept me awake. I thought maybe some bearings in the machine were bad or something.

I haven't had noise problems, but I have had other problems. When I lift my mask up to readjust it the machine shuts off even with the setting not set to shut off. The buttons then flashed on and off and the screen read error service needed. That was cleared by unplugging the machine and plugging it back in. I also noticed that the plug on the back of the machine was warmer than it should be. Have any of you had a problem like this?

I have the same machine and have heard a high pitched noise but it wasn't from the machine, it was the mask. I think it was from excess humidity.
