How many have lost weight since starting C-PAP Therapy?
I've been battling my weight for years now. I also think I have had OSA for years now, but was only recently diagnosed. I feel my OSA has contributed to my weight gain and my inability to lose weight. I'm hopeful that as I pay off my "sleep debt" and get to feeling better, that I will be able to lose weight.
I was just wondering what experiences others on this forum have had.
Thanks for your input!

I haven't lost weight, but I've only been on it for 9 days and haven't really gotten good sleep yet.

I did not vote for the fact that the correct option for me wasn't listed!
I have been on cpap therapy for 15 months now and for the first 8 months, I stayed the same but for the past 4 months, I have packed on a what feels like quite a few pounds, I don't have a scale- however, I think alot of it has to do with sitting at the computer for so long and not getting the proper amount of exercise, that is my case anyway...
And, as we get older, I think we tend to pack on a few extra pounds as we aren't constantly (running as fast as we used to)!

Even though you didn't gain weight immediately, I think the last option would be appropriate for you.SleepyNoMore wrote:I did not vote for the fact that the correct option for me wasn't listed!

And I agree that too much time in front of the computer and not enough exercise can be attributed to weight gain. Can we blame it on this forum???

Absoutley, alot of my weight gain is from being on this forum along with lots of ice cream and pop corn...

Hi, I'm new to this site. My husband has sleep apnea and posts to this board. He's been trying to push me to get diagnosed, and thought that this site might encourage me to be more open to it. i did at one point lose a significant amount of weight, but have reached a wall, and not sure why. Could sleep apnea really be the reason why i'm up against this wall with my weight now?
I have taken 2 home tests in the past and they've both been unsuccessful. One doctor said if i have it, it's a very minor case, so not sure i need to bother.

Re: How many have lost weight since starting C-PAP Therapy?
Well, I'm the one at the first option.
I never could gain weight - whether on CPAP or not.
I don't think weight has all that much to do with apnea, regardless of what opinions I find here.
It has more to do with heredity than anything else.
Sitting in front of a computer has nothing to do with weight gain - thousands of skinny folk have desk jobs.
As for me, my "skinny" neck has more to do with my apnea than anything else - plus I inherited it from my mom, who had it.
That's my opinion.

Re: How many have lost weight since starting C-PAP Therapy?
Thanks for your opinion Jay. Personally, I think one complicates the other. It's kind of like the old conundrum - which came first, the chicken or the egg? Some can say with certainty that they had OSA before they were overweight. Most of us are not sure. I agree - I think OSA has more do to with heredity than with being overweight. I do think that the more weight a person puts on, the worse OSA gets. I also think that OSA isn't doing any favors for one's metabolism.packitin wrote:I don't think weight has all that much to do with apnea, regardless of what opinions I find here.

You say
This is very true. Some of us have to work harder to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. If people tell me that losing weight may help my OSA, I agree that it may help, but it may not eliminate the problem completely. I point out that my Dad has OSA and I think it's hereditary. I also point out that not everyone who has OSA is overweight and not everyone who is overweight has OSA.packitin wrote:Sitting in front of a computer has nothing to do with weight gain - thousands of skinny folk have desk jobs.

Re: How many have lost weight since starting C-PAP Therapy?
Although the holidays tend to be my heaviest time of year, I can honestly say
I havent gained or lost weight since beginning my therapy Feb 08'. In the same
note, I've maintained the same exercise regimen and try to 'watch' what I eat,
as I do realize how quickly a few pounds can cling to a waistline.
In some ways I'm blessed as I don't crave sweets and rarely eat them,
dont drink soda or caffeine, and I'm a vegetarian, so my calorie count does
remain rather consistent year-round.

Re: How many have lost weight since starting C-PAP Therapy?
I've lost some weight, but it is because I have made a conscious effort to eat better with my husband who was diagnosed with diabetes last month. Prior to my better eating habits, I had not gained or lost any weight with CPAP therapy. However, I would like to blame my newlywed weight gain on OSA. I don't think it was the case though.
The only time I ever lost weight effortlessly was when I started taking the YAZ birth control pill. I lost 10 pounds without changing a thing. I didn't end up staying on it, and I gained the 10 pounds back, again without making any changes. Being a woman, I feel that my weight can fluctuate within 7 pounds depending on what time of month it is.
Men, be thankful you don't have to deal with that.

Hello Been on CPAP for over a year now --lost 21 pounds so far but that was in the last 4 months when I got diagnosed with borderline diabetes. It is the medicine that helps me loose the weight plus sleeping better I have more energy to do more exercise. The CPAP really helps give you the energy to want to go walking and doing other things besides feeling fatigued. Good Luck!!

Re: How many have lost weight since starting C-PAP Therapy?
My weight was beginning to be a problem with undiagnosed apnea. As soon as I thought I might have OSA I lost over 20 pounds (down to about 188) out of pure fear.
I also wanted to put my best foot forward for my sleep study, at the lowest weight possible.
Since xPAP, I average around 195, and I stay fit with running and weights. The xPAP therapy has helped me control hormones and mood, and thus weight.
It's not magic, however. xPAP is a help, but the OSA patient still needs to practice sensible self-control and eating habits.
Good luck to anyone working to "hold the line". You can do this.

Re: How many have lost weight since starting C-PAP Therapy?
I haven't lost since I started CPAP. In fact, when I started CPAP I was down about 42 lbs from my highest weight, but since I started CPAP I've gained about 10 lbs of that back. I exercise a lot more than I used to. Very frustrating. I think I'm just not burning as many calories as I sleep, and I'm in a better mood so I skip less meals. It's going to take me a while to figure out my new calories burned per day.
Re: How many have lost weight since starting C-PAP Therapy?
I have put on some weight since starting CPAP therapy. I'm not sure I can say CPAP had anything to do with it as I also quit smoking about the same time and my play a part in my weight gain.

Re: How many have lost weight since starting C-PAP Therapy?
I have lost weight but that isn't really because of the CPAP though I am sure it didn't hurt. I walk over 2 miles every day and have reduced the size of my meals and stopped having chocolate in the house. I do have more energy overall with CPAP and that can't hurt anything.
