CPAP - The first 3 days

Post by rwalker » Thu Dec 25, 2008 9:42 am

Well, i have started the CPAP treatment and at the moment it is a bit of a nightmare, i will not winge though because i know it is very early and it will take time to get used to.

My machine is a ResMed S8 Escape ii and the mask is a ResMed full Face Mirage Quattro my setting is 12.5.

First night was not good, hardly any sleep, Second night i got around 4 hrs of interrupted sleep and last night i managed around 5 hrs of un-interrupted sleep (then Santa woke me up).

I don't seem to feel any change in the way i feel in the mornings but it's early days yet and listening and joining in at this forum is fantastic help to me as we all seem to have had the same problem especially when starting out.

I do have one problem, the bridge of my nose is so sore from what must be the rubbing from the mask, i have tried not having the mask so tight but as soon as i lay on my side it starts to leak so i have to tighten the darn thing up, any advise would be great.

Wishing all a Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Welcome! You are doing great making it that many hours a night. I am not familiar with your mask so I can not lend suggestions. My best advice is to keep trying.
S8 AutoSet II with H4i Humid, reader + software
M Series Auto w Aflex with HH, reader + software
IntelliPAP AutoAdjust with HH, reader + software
Mirage Liberty Full Face with Nasal Pillows and Head Gear

Welcome to the board, rwalker!

Hopefully, some Quattro users will be able to offer you some help soon.

In the meantime, try this:

Go to google.com, and type this into the search box of Google:

quattro nose sore site:cpaptalk.com

Doing it that way in Google (adding site:cpaptalk.com) to the words you want to search for, often works better than using the "Search" box on the message board itself.

That will bring up links to quite a few topics dealing with that particular mask issue you're having:

Hope you get some good holiday sleep!

Hi rwalker,

I have been on CPAP for just over 2 weeks now and I had the same problem with the leaks and sore schnozzola.

This is what worked for me after a week's worth of trial and error and sore nose:

I put moleskin, just a small piece, over the sore spot.

I applied moleskin to both of the cups on the forehead piece.

I turned the dial on the forehead piece ALL the way to the highest setting, so the thing stuck out as far as it will go.

I put the mask and headgear on loosely and laid down on the bed, adjusted the mask comfortably and then tightened the upper straps just til barely snug. Not tight.

Then I snugged up the lower straps and then sat up and turned the machine on to the mask fitting and checked the fit.
For me, who has a long skinny nose, I had to move the mask up pretty high on my nose to get a good fit, no leaks and no more sore nose.

If you leave the straps a bit looser, the mask can then fill the soft outside layer that sets on your face with air and seal it.

My mask is now set so all I have to do is slip the headgear over my head, make sure it's straight, move it in place and then attach the lower straps. For me, I found it easier to unclasp both lower straps from the mask to remove it. I was fighting it when trying to take it on and off with only one strap undone.

I made a "special pillow" for myself, based on the design of the "papillow" I saw online. The cutout part of the pillow allows the mask to not get pushed up when you lay on your side. Someone here on this forum had made one and posted a picture of it.

And lastly, I hung the hose on a contraption we rigged up to keep it up in the air and off the bed to reduce the pull on the mask.

Hope I have helped a bit. Keep tweaking, it will all come together.

Merry Christmas!!
