congestion poll
Re: congestion poll
Wording is not the best.....if I was breathing alright at night I would likely not need the APAP, right?
(I answered second option....)
The occasional runny nose is what forces me to take some treatment measures....
If I am at least partially clear, I can mask up fine even if I can't do treatment.
Mold, diet, time of month all impact stuffiness for me. I go with hot bath (followed by nose blowing), aromatherapy, and avoiding certain foods if I start getting the stuffies.

Re: congestion poll
J,
When I said "breathe ok" at night I meant no congestion, not no need for a CPAP.
Gary
PS Yes I could have worded better, but what the heck...it was my first poll creation.

Re: congestion poll
Also not a option for suffering from congestion most of the time, day & Night, like I do. I suffer all day so I can use OTC drugs, that I am not suppose to take due to heart problems. to get some relief at night. Jim

Re: congestion poll
my answer was unless I take something I spend the night congested I've had that problem for a long time.
newbie Hosehead, can use all the advice you can give.
Re: congestion poll
I use Nasaline about every third night... unless I've been exposed to mold or other allergens, in which case, it's every night until the symptoms clear.
I also use Quercetin and C which is a bioflavonoid, and also a great decongestant which does not make me sleepy.

THE HARD TRUTH
Re: congestion poll
I think that a lot of the pro CPAP ,surgery and dental apnea appliance providers have tried to post on this blog because, lets face some facts here.We all know that we are dying of slow motion suicide with out treatment. And the bottom line from the heath care providers is MONEY ! They make the process for treatment to long ,to expensive and you have to jump through hoops to resove the problem. The doctors are in bed with the companies that make the equipment. What was the first thing that your doctor did after you first polysomnigraph. They signed you up for that worth less air compressor that fails 60% of the time and are making thousands of $ from the insurance companies. That is if you are fortunate to have insurance. The CPAP providers try to make you think that you are the problem. You must adapt to the CPAP, not the other way around.Lets look at the reasons that CPAP fails. The setting on the machine should be set to a standard that every patient can under stand, Like PSI not liters of H2O. My setting was 11 but I had to put 50 LBS of force on my straps just to keep tha mask on. Then there is the the breathing against the incomming pressure problem. It's like breating into a baloon all night long. You have to force the air out of your longs and it screws up your natural rythem. I am a jet aircraft mechanic in the air force and I know alot about the oxygen delivery sytem for the pilots. His oxygen regulator regulates how he breaths in and how he breaths out, It's perfictly natural. So why even try CPAP in the first place so you have to waiste 3 months proving that it dosn't work. They ought to quit making that damn thing and if they want to use positive pressure use a bipap. Then they have you again, the bipap costs twice as much as the CPAP.Then if that dosn't work then they want you to have surgery or a dental applience. I had a humidifed Fisher and Paykel and I have rhinitus. I cranked the setting on the CPAP to the max and with a room humidifier and my nose blocked completly off in 4 minutes. Then I went surching for a dentist to make me the device. The first dentist wanted $3,400 up front and the second one wanted $1,900 up front. So what did I do then. I made my own from 2 football mouth guards. It did work but you could not adjust the forward position of the jaw. Our problem is as simple as it is deadly. It's mechanical. And it's not rocket science. I have been working on solutions for 6 month's and now I have found one AND IT CALLED PURE SLEEP.iT WORKS AS GOOD AS A $3,400 DENTIST RIP OFF. Since the doctors know that we are dying to sleep why are they putting profits ahead of our health.enough is enough
Re: congestion poll
I had the same problem the wholle time I. I would ween myself off that stuff then a few days later I would stuff up again, get headaches and would go back to it. I tried saline but the problen kept coming back. I had a constant struggle every night just trying to breath. Cpap is great but you need to breath. I used afrin for probaby 6 years. I had my septum fixed and radiofrequency tissue reduction. The radiofrequency shrinks your tissue like nose spray but is permanent. My sinus is great now and is just like I used a bunch of afrin, without using it. I hope my sense of smell will return someday.Afrin is pretty bad for us.Check out his link for a permanent fix.

Re: congestion poll
I have been suffering from hayfever for all my life, with the resulting glued up nose. I have had 5 different lots of sinus surgery and had my septum undeviated. Nothing really worked. And I have been first pick in the national snoring team.
This time of year in Southern Australia is hayfever season. This when I spend many miserable nights. I'm sure I don't have to describe it to you.
But then along came CPAP. Since i started about 3 months ago, I have had no nasal symptoms. Clear nose, no post nasal drip.
It is a miracle

Re: congestion poll
Hmmm....
Needed a third option. I was congested heavily before CPAP.
And I can treat it, but I've found almost any drug treatment tends to lose efficacy eventually if I take it continuously. I've done saline rinses twice and caught wicked sinus infections both times. The second time was a seal pressurized spray that was unsealed only seconds before it went into my nostril. So I don't believe it was my technique.

Re: congestion poll
I learned on this forum to try passive humification to help stop congestion. Turned off the heat, and also added a passive humidifier to my setup, and my congestion problem has vanished. I'd suggest to anyone using a heated humidifier with their XPAP to try turning the heat off. So easy to do, and it sure made the difference for me.

They have it in a larger bottle (less expensive per capsule), but I figured I would point this one out for anyone who just wishes to try it and see if it works for them.
I learned about it from The New Vitamin Revolution in Health Care. My husband and I both have nasty allergies (in N'Awlins, the ragweed can grow ten feet high!) and this has helped both of us. Be aware that if you are not used to take quantities of Vitamin C, it's worthwhile to build up to the amount in these capsules, or it will give you traveler's quickstep!
