The word "commando" came out of WWII. I would suggest an update of the title, "Going Commando", to "Going Suicide Bombing".

Having insurance that pays for a helicopter ambulance is not "being careful".

I didn't know him anywhere near as long as you did. And I miss him deeply. So I can only imagine.

It seems the word commando has it's origins in the Portuguese language. So I think we can trace the tentacles of the word commando all the way back to a rather fierce jelly fish from Portugal.

If we're sticking strictly to the WWII theme, perhaps "kamikaze" is the closest word? Of course I'd then have to fall on my sword, as I was unsuccessful...

The suggestion to use a dental appliance is a great idea - it might not work 100%, but it will certainly be better than nothing. I'll have to do some research into where and how I can get one in South Africa, if I decide to do anymore long hikes.

I thought I'd give you the link to my dental device experiences (just starting). I plan to get charts and graphs to show outcomes and post them here. I'm still in the early stages, so nothing yet. One compelling reason for me to do this is so that I can go camping with my grandkids. I love camping and it was hard for me to get used to the idea that I'd never have the freedom to camp like I used to. I've decided that it doesn't need to work as well as my cpap, just as long as my AHI is 5 or under I'll be happy. I do feel a bit worse when it's over 1.0, but that's acceptable as a trade off. Good luck in finding someone is S.A. who makes them. I had to drive a couple of hours to the place where I got mine.

If you can afford a real mouthpiece, that would be great. I use one of those, myself; I use it every night to keep my mouth shut and my jaw forward during my PAP therapy. But if you don't want to invest in a dentist-made mouthpiece for the kind of occasional use you may have in mind, you might want to go to a sports store and experiment with an inexpensive ($1-$3 US) sports-style boil-and-bite mouthpiece like what an amateur football player or amateur boxer would use. The trick is, once you boil it according to instructions, do the fitting step with your jaw forward, with your bottom teeth further forward than your top teeth. You may have to buy a few of them and experiment a little with fitting and trimming, but that can be a very cheap way to get something that would function OK for the occasional camping trip. Since that style of mouthpiece (as opposed to one a dentist would make) doesn't have much grip to hold your teeth into it, I suggest using a chin strap with it. But again, a cheap stretchy sports-style headband worn from the crown of your head to your chin can do nicely if it is wide enough. I did that myself several nights to see if I would be able to tolerate a dentist-made mouthpiece before I had one made.
