Top ten tips for good XPAP sleep

Post by puffing billy » Fri Dec 12, 2008 2:14 pm

I thought it might be interesting if we could make up a list of the top ten tips for sleeping with XPAP.
So my starter for ten is "Correct adjustment of your Mask".

Correct attitude adjustment.

#4: Finding a way *not* to think about your xPAP/hose/mask/etc. so you can actually relax and sleep!

I either leave the TV on (with a sleep timer) or listen to a CD. A window fan to block out the machine noise works well in summer too.

Hose cover so that the hose is insulated -- gives it a more cozy feel rather than the medical equipment it is.

Play your favorite music to drown out the new noises from your equipment!
Life is not about the amount of breaths you take;
It's about the moments that take your breath away.

Any more thoughts.
If you can put your own top ten in order it would be interesting to compare notes.

Changing the rules are we? Ok …

1. Facing the fact that you will spend the rest of your life treating your condition (ie. Eliminate the denial and submit to the hose).
2. Educate yourself about your condition (ie. The “full” consequences of going untreated, what your sleep study means, OSA and CPAP terminology).
3. Get yourself an APAP (or Auto Bilevel) and don’t settle for anything less.
4. Get yourself the software and learn to track your efficacy data.
5. Get yourself the P&B HC-150 humidifier instead of the integrated one that come with your machine.
6. Find yourself a mask that is both comfortable and does not leak (leaks must be controlled before trying to optimize pressure settings).
7. Learn the art of hose management (how to route it and how to insulate and/or warm it to prevent rainout).
8. Learn good sleep hygiene … everyone is different and like with masks, you have figure out what works best for you.
9. Eat a healthy diet and exercise daily to enhance the quality of your sleeping experience.
10. Last and certainly not least, become a member of the cpaptalk family and participate by taking and giving of cpap experience.
