S8 filter observation . . .

Post by hobbs » Mon Dec 01, 2008 12:11 am

Changed my S8 Hypo filter after one month and the filter is very discolored. This is my first use of the Hypo filter. I had been using the standard S8 filter and when changed once a month there was little if any discoloration. The hypo sure stops a lot more stuff from getting into the machine/my lungs.

Is the discoloration actual dirt in/on the filter?

...and next question where did you obtain the hypo filters?

Probably time to swap out my filter too... I notice some dust buildup on the outside. Although I have heard it said that filters really start to work better when there is a layer of dust over them... as that layer of dust helps filter more dust.

When my DME-guy delivered my first machine, an S7, I asked him how often the filter should be changed. His reply was: "Oh, you never have to change these filters. Just take it out and flick it with your finger, like this." He then flicked the filter a few times and put it back.

I pass that along strictly for entertainment value--not because I think he was right. In fact, I'm sure he must be wrong. He was, after all, with my DME; they have yet to be right about anything. That's not what it says in the manual for my present machine, an S8, anyway.

This guy must not be with the DME program just yet... as they usually try to sell something.

My DME wanted me to purchase a 5 year supply of filters. Their logic was: "it is easier to get this through on your insurance the first pass." My translation of that: "we don't know if you will be on this machine in 6 months so we want to load you up with supplies and make our sales while the going is good right now."

cpap.com sells the hypos along with washable filters for the S8 series. The hypos are pricey, but I'd think are worth the extra cash for the health benefits -- assuming they last a reasonable length of time.

I did not see them on their website? I saw no actual RESMED branded filters, only generic branded. I purchased 50 Resmed Hypo filters. Works out to $2.00usd a month when changed monthly.

This site has good prices on the S8's. http://www.cpapfiltersandsupplies.com/d ... &path=1_29
$3.47/ea if you buy a 5 pack. I couldn't even find the Hypo- Allergenic filters for the S-8 models on CPAP.com.

My DME told me to take my filter out and dust it off with the finger. She said that they did have filters for sale, but didn't seem to think that I would need one for a long time.
