cold nose

Post by higgsernie » Tue Nov 11, 2008 10:10 am

I enjoy sleeping in a cold room with lots of covers. This is my first winter with the CPAP. What do you do to keep your mask from freezing your nose??? I use the Swift LT and it freezes the lower part of my nose. When I tried the Sleepnet IQ, that covers the whole nose, the whole nose freezes. Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ernie

More clues needed - but you could certainly find a heated hose helpful. Or running your hose up under the covers.

I started CPAP this week, and the cold nose thing has been my biggest problem! It woke me up my first two nights, and I've been struggling with it since to a lesser degree. I have tried cranking my humidifier, but that's left me with uncomfortably warm air that is as bad, if not worse, than the cold nose. I'm considering sleeping with a bandaid on my nose just to give me some protection.

Actually, I feel like the tip of my nose is cool, too. But when I touch it, it doesn't really feel too cold--it's like my brain perceives it's cold but it isn't.

And kind of funny, I thought about the bandaid thing too. And I also use the Swift. I thought of lab-ratting some type of nose-tip cap, parachute-like design. I'm not that desperate yet. (Or perhaps cutting a small rectangle of fleece and putting it where the center of the bandaid is, then lay the bandaid on top of it.)

But I guess it makes sense that your nose tip would feel cool if the room temp is cool and the majority of the rest of your body has layers of covers. I'm guessing the simplest cure would be to turn the heater up in your room and make do with less covers.

If you read my prior posts you'll see that I LOVE the Aussie heated hose. Yes it's kind of pricey, but it helps to warm the air coming in and prevents rainout.

you can't beat one of these in the Winter, expensive but well worth it:

(price has actually come down due to US$, takes about a week to get it via USPS).

It eliminates rainout too.

Are you referring to the mask itself being cold against your skin or the air coming in?

I prefer to not breathe very warm air. With the nasal mask the tip of my nose felt cold if in passover or on low. With pillows I don't really feel the air so it's not an issue. One thing I like about using cpap is I can pull my whole head under the covers since my air source is outside.

That's why I like the Headrest.
Woke with a freezing nose the other night. Just pulled the covers over my head leaving the vent free.
Worked like a charm.

I use my heated hose all year round just to keep my nose from freezing. I have mine on a timer. It turns on just before bedtime and shuts off shortly after my alarm goes off. I've had it for over 2 years now and love it!

I have the Quattro FFM. Most of my nose is okay, but I find the area near the bridge of my nose to be very bothered by the cold air. I have my humidifier set at around 3.5 or 4. It was ok during the summer, but now I guess I need to use a higher setting. That heated hose sounds like a good idea, too..I think I will look into that.

Thanks Everyone,
I like the idea of the heated hose!! I have tried putting my head under the covers but didn't like the cold air blowing from the mask.
Again, Thanks Everyone
